Report: EA Origin to power Wii U online

Electronic Arts is helping Nintendo in its development of Wii U's online service, according to reports, and is bidding to make its Origin service a key part of the upcoming console's online offering. According to an EA intern speaking to WiiUGo, the console's online service will offer voice and video chat, leaderboards and friends lists. Nintendo has previously said its approach to Wii U online will be "much more flexible," which the source claims is a deliberate attempt to differentiate the service from Xbox Live.

Peta: Tanooku suit shows Mario is pro-fur

Animal rights activist group Peta has lined up videogames in its sights again, saying Super Mario 3D Land's Tanooki suit endorses the wearing of fur. "When on a mission to rescue the princess, Mario has been known to use any means necessary - even wearing the skin of a raccoon dog to give him special powers," the group's website reads. "Tanooki may just be a suit in Mario games, but in real life, tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it's okay to wear fur."

Livingstone expecting "positive response" to skills review

Ian Livingstone has said he is expecting a "positive response" to the Next Gen skills review he co-authored with Double Negative founder Alex Hope. The report highlighted the shortcomings in the way the national curriculum prepares students for careers in the digital and creative industries, and called for computer science to replace ICT, which focuses on the use of software packages instead of how to make them. The government was expected to respond to the report this week, but speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Livingstone confirmed it would take a little longer.

Garriott to build a New Britannia

Richard Garriott, creator of Ultima and Ultima Online, has spoken of his desire to rebuild his virtual world after being disappointed at the direction in which EA has taken Old Britannia since he left Origin Systems in 2000. In a lengthy post on Facebook, the self-styled Lord British writes: "Elves and ninjas have been added [to Ultima Online], things I specifically had banned. This is only a small example of why and how Ultima has drifted away from Richard Garriott, but I have not drifted away from Ultima. Over-used, irrelevant and re-used RPG elements are not the essence of my Ultimate RPG."

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 review

Is Capcom's speedy tag fighting game revision too early out of the gates?

Ultimate arrives just nine months after Marvel Vs Capcom 3, a fast turnaround of a fighting game revision even by Capcom's standards. We'd like to think the publisher felt compelled to action by the overwhelming dominance in the original of character Dark Phoenix, a glitch missed by QA that players could exploit to deliver overpowered combos, and some distinctly fuzzy netcode. Sadly there's the niggling sense that the speedy revision was the plan all along.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary review

Is Xbox's crown jewel still worthy of its subtitle?

It’s hard to shake the feeling that Anniversary is something of a PR stunt. A full recreation of the game that launched the Xbox brand – glitches and all – given some current-gen cosmetic surgery, it’s impossible to imagine a release that could tell us less about 343 Industries' understanding of the series with which it has been entrusted, beyond the fact it has to preserve it.

Opinion: Gaming's aggregation binge

Today's blockbuster games include a mixture of play-styles, but, asks Steven Poole, is this lack of focus a good thing?

The decline of newspapers, some say,
can be attributed to the Internet’s
power as the great disaggregator. Newspapers aggregate, bundling disparate
stuff (news, recipes, fashionista fluff, crosswords and so forth), but the Internet disaggregates. Online, everything can
be provided separately, and better, by specialists. You go to Craigslist to look at classified ads; you get your celebrity news from Gawker, your sports coverage from
the BBC website, and your sarcastic deconstructions of political phraseology
from Unspeak.
