We can still expect to see better graphics from the current generation of consoles, says Square Enix's worldwide technology director.

Speaking to us at the Develop conference last month, Square Enix Group worldwide technology director Julien Merceron told us that principal among the improvements we can expect to see from games made for the current generation of consoles are developments in global illumination, a form of realtime lighting.

Nerd rage, frightened dwarves and the death of gamers - another day on the internet.

Chris Bateman of ihobo kicks the tyres of games-as-service. It’s a multi-faceted issue and one of the interesting implications Bateman highlights is the effect on the next console cycle. “Consoles need retail to make their product work,” he writes. But service games don’t need retail.

Plants Vs Zombies: Introduction to perfection

Graham McAllister presents the five reasons why Plants Vs Zombies is a masterclass in experience design.

The formula for the perfect game may be an area of hot discussion, but most would argue that games that are easy to get into and difficult to put down goes along the right lines. Players' early experience of a game is critical: this is the period in which they're making up their minds whether to devote more time, and often money, to the rest of it.

So how do we make games with a polished early experience? Let's take some lessons from a game which I think does it incredibly well, PopCap's Plants Vs Zombies.

Sony and LG resolve patent dispute

The two firms have been filing patent infringement claims against each other since December last year, one of which resulted in European customs officers being ordered to seize incoming shipments of PS3 consoles. The matter has now been resolved, with an LG spokesperson telling Reuters: "LG and Sony recently agreed to drop patent infringement lawsuits against each other." As part of the agreement, LG says it has signed a cross-licensing deal with Sony.

The Land of Me at Port Ellen PS: Gleeful children lost in the learning space 3/5

There has been much discussion over the past few years about the nature of learning spaces and how these should be designed in order to effect the best conditions for learning. This was something that I reflected on during and after my visit to P.1/2 at Port Ellen PS having seen a traditional rectangular classroom being transformed in to a magical place where adventure and learning happened.

Working with parents the class teacher at Port Ellen PS designed and made a number of areas that matched those in the The Land of Me. Each area had many references to the characters and themes running through the chapters in the software but also to a range of other contexts for learning and development. What was clearly evident though in my visit was the way in which the children had completely immersed themselves in the learning space that was their traditionally shaped classroom – and in so doing they had lost themselves in learning.

Dancing with otters at the riverside

I spoke with one young pupil about the area that had been set up as the riverbank. I was introduced to Dodo the Scottish Otter who I was told liked to dance. Dodo had a number of dance moves that the children had been

learning and putting together in sequences and they had been making their own too. I also saw that the children had been learning all about creatures that might live in or near the riverside and that they had been outside adventuring and learning about creatures that lived on their island. I will go in to further detail about curricular activity and CfE references in a later post but at this stage the gleeful look on this learners face in this accompanying video says a lot about how learning can be positively influenced by such a motivating and exciting learning space in which one can learn!

Reading in the cave
Classrooms sometimes have very comfortable spaces that are designated for reading. Spaces where children can relax on comfortable cushions or a nice carpet and take time to read. The take on this reading space during this project was structured around Granny Olive’s cave. This is the storytelling place in The Land of Me and it is a
Reading in the cave
calm and peaceful place where stories are brought to life by a very old giant tortoise. This video shows a young learner being interrupted by me when he was quietly reading The Stick Man. Listen to what he says and then watch how he engages with his book as I move away with the camera. Yet again, we see a thoughtful learning space situated in a meaningful context that appears to be having a positive impact on encouraging good learning; in this case independently-chosen reading time.

Classrooms, particularly those in Primary schools, are often transformed to mirror or ‘become’ the context in which learning is situated at particular times. When they are done well they can impact in a positive fashion on teaching and learning. As we can see from the work at Port Ellen PS the effort can be very worthwhile indeed.

Xbox Indie Game Fortresscraft grosses $1 million

The Minecraft homage, the work of Projector Games, has grossed a million dollars in six months, the developer has announced. With 350,000 copies sold, it's believed to be the most successful game on the Xbox Live Indie Games service, though sales are sure to slow down when Minecraft gets an official XBLA release, with Kinect support, later this year.

Disney Interactive losses widen

Disney’s game division posted an increased operating loss for its third fiscal quarter ended July 2, 2011, despite a jump in revenues. Operating results for the firm’s Interactive Media segment declined 32 per cent year-over-year to a loss of $86 million (£53.2m), while revenues for the quarter increased 27 per cent to $251 million (£155.3m). “Lower segment operating results were driven by the inclusion of Playdom, including the impact of acquisition accounting, partially offset by an improvement at our console game business,” Disney said. “The improvement at our console games business reflected higher unit sales and lower marketing costs. The increase in unit sales was driven by the performance of Lego Pirates Of The Caribbean and Cars 2 in the current quarter compared to Toy Story 3 and Split Second in the prior year. These increases were partially offset by higher cost of sales reflecting fees paid to the developer of Lego Pirates Of The Caribbean.” The news was brighter for the company as a whole, which saw quarterly profits up eleven per cent to $1.48 billion (£915.8m), and revenues up seven per cent to $10.7 billion (£6.6b).

Nintendo: 3DS momentum needed to retain platform support

This week’s $80 3DS price cut, the upcoming release of a ‘Flame Red’ hardware colour, and an improved software line-up will be key to driving sales of the portable and retaining support for the platform, according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. “This is a momentum business and when you don't have the momentum it creates a tough situation whether it's with retailers or with third-party publishers who become a bit more reluctant to support a platform,” he told USA Today. The executive also said The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, released in June, "is selling exceptionally well now. It's driving hardware. We've seen similar results from Japan with the launch of Star Fox.” The company has “high expectations” for October’s Pokemon Rumble Blast, November’s Super Mario 3D Land and December’s Mario Kart 7, Fils-Aime added. “This is really about reinvigorating the Nintendo 3DS momentum and having that … power through all during the key holiday selling season."

Mindscape exits game industry after 30 years

U-Sing publisher Mindscape has shut its last internal development studio and confirmed plans to withdraw from the videogames business after three decades, Develop reports. The closure of Paris-based developer Punchers Impact, which was formed in December 2009 with staff drawn from the likes of EA and the ashes of Free Radical, is to result in the loss of around 40 jobs. Punchers Impact built various casual games for home consoles, but the failure of PC racer Crasher to make an impact at retail hit Mindscape hard. “We had relied much on that game,” a company spokesperson said. “It was not a success and was important to us that it was. We are no longer going to work in the game software business.”

NPD to track European videogame market

Market research firm the NPD Group has announced that it intends to track videogame spend in several countries in Europe with a view to providing a European version of its game industry report. At present, the Total Consumer Spend Service report covers estimated new and used retail, subscription, microtransaction and rental sales for the US. The European report will initially cover the UK, France and Germany and NPD will begin tracking the territories in the fourth quarter of this year. "The new digital distribution channels in video games are not country specific," NPD analyst Anita Frazier explained. "They are global in nature, which is why NPD is taking its proven, proprietary methodology, developed over a number of years, and applying it to a global perspective."
