Vita is Sony's "most developer-friendly hardware yet"

New handheld has been built "by developers, for developers" and not "in a bunker somewhere in Japan," says SCEE at Develop.

With PlayStation Vita, Sony believes it has learned from its past hardware's reputation for being difficult to develop for and, thanks to feedback from first and thirdparty studios, has produced its "most developer-friendly hardware yet."

Media Molecule: Pitching LittleBigPlanet and the future

Sony studio reveals that its initial demo came up short and how it went about fixing it.

Though it’s hard to picture Media Molecule’s all-conquering LittleBigPlanet as anything other than the assuredly solid package that it became, a keynote discussion with studio founders - chaired by Phil Harrison - at the Develop conference in Brighton this morning revealed its inception was far from smooth.

PopCap unveils Pig Up

The earnings targets laid out in EA's proposed acquisition highlight PopCap's need to expand. The first effort in its attempt to drive the final purchase price to $1.3 billion is Pig Up, a Facebook game which sees players make pigs fly by eating apples - sorry, "flapples" - and avoiding bees. The studio points out that the game is still in early development, but it is available to try on Facebook for a limited time.

Ms 'Splosion Man review

Can Twisted Pixel maintain the frenetic pace in this explosive sequel?

"Your move, Unreal” chirps a hirsute Twisted
Pixel staffer during an opening splash sequence advertising the studio’s engine, Beard. It’s easily the funniest moment in the game, but he could just as easily be offering the challenge to Duke Nukem, given the rampant, though daft, sexism prevalent throughout the game.

Don't copy Zynga, Facebook tells developers

Sean Ryan, director of game partnerships at Facebook, has dismissed suggestions that Zynga has gaming on the social network all to itself. "It's not a market where ten apps get all the users," he said at Seattle's Casual Connect event yesterday. "The market is growing like crazy and you can participate in it." While Zynga has the world-building social genre locked up, Ryan pointed to the relative lack of romance, hunting, fishing, and fighting games, as well as FPSs and RPGs on Facebook, and said: "It's easy to forget that this market is less than four years old. It's too late to clone a game that is a clone of another game, but there is plenty of opportunity."

Panel: Are Smartphones the New Consoles?

The technology gap is closing, but the games gap may be harder to close.

“It’s not a technology problem or a hardware problem or a business problem – it’s a design problem,” said Microsoft Game Studio’s business development manager Phil Waymouth today, when addressing the difficulties of moving from creating standalone console games to crafting cross-media IPs that spans platforms.

Bethesda: Publishing Wet was the right decision

Despite a poor critical and commercial reception, Bethesda vice president of marketing Pete Hines told us that he has no regrets about the decision to pick up the game for release, but admits that the publisher is now focused on "bigger and better things." "Nothing is a hundred percent in this industry, you know," he said. Wet could have done better but honestly for us it did pretty well - it sold quite a few copies for what it was. It wasn't Fallout 3, but not everything is... we're trying to look for even bigger and better things so that you look at them and go, 'That's really a game I can't afford to miss.'" Hines added: "I'll admit this freely, I was [one of the] few guys who saw Wet at Bethesda. I was like, 'That's really cool. It's very different.' It's not a home run. You don't look at it and go: 'There's no way that won't be a commercial smash.' The graphics were not the highest end graphics of the day, but it had a quality, it had personality, it had an edge to it.

Uncharted film "going back to the videogame"

Replacement Uncharted movie director Neil Burger has revealed that he is going back to Naughty Dog's adventure series for inspiration. Burger, who directed The Limitless and Illusionist, took up the reins following original director David O. Russells' exit. Burger has discarded Russell's plans to cast Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake at the head of a family of antique traders, stressing that the game is a rich source of ideas as it stands. "Mainly we're beginning from scratch and going back to the video game," Burger told Crave Online. "Because there's a lot of cool stuff, actually, from the videogame, if you know it… It's really one of the most cinematic video games, and one that has really developed characters. So, you know, there's a lot of cool, really intense things that, if they work for the film's story, I want to use them." The news will come as a relief to Uncharted fans hoping for a more authentic experience at the cinema.
