Tribes: Ascend dev shifts focus to PC

Hi-Rez Studios has put the Xbox 360 version of its upcoming Tribes reboot on the back burner following its decision to switch to the free-to-play model. Microsoft's hitherto reticence to allow microtransactions on Xbox Live has prompted Hi-Rez to focus its attention on the PC version of the game, but it is not cancelling the Xbox 360 release entirely, explaining to Gamespot: "An eventual XBLA version - and even PSN version - is not out of the question but neither will be this year."

Just Dance 2 becomes biggest thirdparty Wii game

The second game in Ubisoft's Wii music series is now the best-selling thirdparty game on Wii, the publisher has announced, and the franchise has now notched up sales of 14 million units worldwide. Ubisoft's Laurent Detoc said: "Ubisoft is incredibly proud of the monumental success Just Dance 2 has had the past nine months. The game’s outstanding performance solidifies the Just Dance brand as a pop culture phenomenon." Just Dance 3 - which sees the series expand to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as Wii - will be released in October.

3DS outsold by DS

In a press release, Nintendo reveals that it sold more than 800,000 systems in the US last month, but it's new glasses-free handheld, 3DS, was comfortably outsold by its predecessor. Over 386,000 DS systems were sold in June, more than double 3DS's sales of 143,000. There was better news for Nintendo in the software charts, though, with 283,000 copies of The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time sold during the month.

Call Of Duty Elite beta begins

Activision's stat-tracking, social subscription service for its Call Of Duty series has now entered beta on Xbox 360, ahead of its launch alongside Modern Warfare 3 in November. Some 2.8 million players have already signed up, and the publisher says invites will be sent out in stages over the next few weeks. Chacko Sonny, studio head of Beachhead, said: "A public beta with the massive Call of Duty community is the best way to generate the scale we need for end-to-end testing. We're looking to get as many participants in the beta as possible, so we ask that fans stay patient as we ramp up in the coming weeks." Activision is still accepting registrations for the beta - head to the source link below if you're interested.

A new Polish development studio has been established by game industry veterans who previously served at the likes of People Can Fly, CD Projekt RED and City Interactive. Crytek: PS Vita “will have a hard time, might be too late”

Sony’s PlayStation Vita will struggle against next-generation mobiles and tablets, according to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. "The Vita is an absolutely fantastic platform but it will have a hard time, and it might be too late," he told the latest issue of Develop (via CVG). "I love Sony as a company, and we have great relations with them, but the Vita is going to have a hard time against the next generation mobiles and all the tablets. There's also the 3DS investing in this market," he added. "It's going to be a battle, and it will be about content and the platform's ability to receive the content. Streamlined social connectivity will also be very important."

Ubisoft introducing online pass system – report

‘Uplay Passport’ granting access to multiplayer features expected to launch alongside Driver: San Francisco later this year.

Ubisoft is reportedly planning to debut its own online pass system when it releases Driver: San Francisco this autumn.

According to a GamerZines, the 'Uplay Passport' will work similarly to online passes introduced by other publishers, restricting online multiplayer access to those who buy a new copy of Driver: San Francisco or purchase a one-time access code from Xbox Live Marketplace or the PlayStation Store.

If true, we’d expect the system to be rolled out across Ubisoft’s catalogue of multiplayer-enabled titles.

Netflix arrives on 3DS

US 3DS owners will have to wait for the Nintendo Video application, which was released on the eShop yesterday but is currently set for a US release later this summer. In the meantime, US movie streaming service Netflix is to launch an app of its own on the 3DS download store tomorrow. An oddly-worded announcement says that full-length 3D movies will soon be available to US 3DS owners, but doesn't specify if that will be through Netflix - which does not currently offer 3D movies - or a separate app.

FIFA 11 holds Nordic top spot

Discounted re-release sees EA Sports' football game top the chart for a second successive week.

EA's ageing football title FIFA 11 is number one in the Nordic all-formats software chat - which collates sales data from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland - for the second week in a row.

FIFA's chart placing nine months after its release is surprising at first, with the main European leagues long since finished and this year's iteration, FIFA 12, only months away.

Free-to-play APB Reloaded gets retail release

APB Reloaded, GamersFirst's reboot of the troubled MMOG that brought about the demise of Scottish developer Realtime Worlds, will be released at retail in the US later this year through publisher IGS Software. It's an odd move at first glance - APB Reloaded is free-to-play - but IGS CEO Paul Lombardi explains that the boxed product, which will retail for $29.99, will contain $45 worth of virtual goods.

Quakecon forums hacked

A post on the Quakecon website reveals that its ageing forums have become the latest videogame website to be hacked. "In recent days, a hacker carried out an unlawful intrusion of the old forums.quakecon.org site, compromising usernames and passwords," the statement reads. It goes on to sound an increasingly familiar refrain, advising affected users who use the same login details elsewhere to change their passwords.

Trenched will see European release, vows Double Fine

Released on Xbox Live Arcade in the US two weeks ago, Double Fine's spin on the tower defence genre is yet to launch in the UK due to a trademark held by a Portuguese board game designer. "This entire process has been very frustrating to us," project lead Brad Muir told Destructoid. " Microsoft owns the IP for Trenched and [is] working to resolve things as quickly as possible. I wish there were more information to give but it's still unclear as to how things will shake out. The one thing I do know is that the game will be released in those territories."

Rovio: we're worth more than PopCap

In the wake of EA's $750 million acquisition of PopCap, Ville Heijari, VP of franchise development at Angry Birds developer Rovio, admits the studio has had "discussions with many different companies" about selling the business. "We really think we have a lot of opportunities with our IP and there's a lot of creativity at the studio beyond Angry Birds," he told Eurogamer. "But the valuation from our point of view is somewhere, I dunno, maybe north of PopCap."

LA Noire lead defends working practices

In an open letter to the IGDA, lead gameplay programmer Dave Heironymus paints a markedly different picture of life at Sydney-based LA Noire developer Team Bondi, following weeks of revelations from disgruntled former staff. While admitting that working hours increased as the project progressed, he insists that reports of 100-hour working weeks are wide of the mark, and shifts blame for the alleged excessive crunch away from studio head Brendan McNamara. "As time went on we failed to make as much progress as we'd have liked and there was growing pressure to work longer hours," he writes. "It was not any one person's fault that we weren't making progress; responsibility for that has to rest with the entire team." While an opposing viewpoint is welcome for balance, Heironymus neglects to address the issue that set the ball rolling: the omission from the game's credits of over 100 staff who left Team Bondi before the project was completed.

2K: strategy games "not contemporary"

Speaking to MCV, 2K president Christoph Hartmann defended the company's decision to reboot the beloved strategy series as an FPS. "The 90s generation of gamers all love XCOM and we own the IP, so we thought, okay, what do we do with it? Every studio we had wanted to do it and each one had its own spin on it," he said. "The problem was that turn-based strategy games were no longer the hottest thing on planet Earth. But this is not just a commercial thing - strategy games are just not contemporary. It's not a case of cashing in on the name. We just need to renew it because times are changing."

Hitman: Absolution: telling stories

With checkpoints and scripted sequences, Absolution isn’t afraid to make some big changes to the Hitman formula. We ask IO why.

What we saw in our playthrough of Hitman: Absolution demo level was pretty choreographed, designed to show off 47’s new moves. There are plenty of alternative approaches in this sandbox, of course. He could have easily shot his way out of the library, or snatched a downed cop’s outfit for a convenient disguise. But sandbox or not, this closed-off and self-contained library segment is simply one part of a greater whole.

White Knight Chronicles II review

Level 5's quest continues, but is it worth seeing through to the end?

As with any popular genre, the cry will occasionally rise: is the JRPG dead? In the presence of White Knight Chronicles II, it’s easy to see why. This is the kind of game that feels stillborn.

The opening is witless: after several long cutscenes that explain nothing, you’re plonked into what looks like a standard character creation menu. But hold, varlet! To access certain hairstyles and accoutrements for your character, you must spend money – real money, that is, not in-game gold. This is your first interaction in a full-price console RPG.
