Peggle, PVZ headed to Facebook?

It's admittedly an obvious move following EA's acquisition this week of PopCap for an initial $750 million, but Games.com spotted a slide in EA's presentation to investors following the deal that strongly hints that two of PopCap's most successful IPs, Peggle and Plants Vs Zombies, will soon be released on Facebook. The slide, headed "Success on Facebook - winning combination", shows logos from the two games - along with EA's Risk Factions and The Sims Social - next to the words: "Future outlook is strong with top IP from both EA and PopCap to come."

Apple raises UK App Store prices

Adjustments for exchanges rates see cheapest apps rise to 69p; better news for Australia and Japan.

Apple has tweaked the pricing of software available on the iOS App Store and, while good news for those in Australia and Japan, UK prices have risen as a result.

The move, reported by MacRumors, reflects recent changes in exchange rates relative to the US dollar and sees the lowest-priced apps on the UK App Store - previously 59p - rise to 69p. Those for sale at the second-lowest price point, £1.19, now cost £1.49.

Report: Zynga offered $1 billion for PopCap

A "source close to the deal" tells Forbes that Facebook gaming king Zynga offered a billion dollars in cash in the hope of acquiring PopCap, part-funded by Goldman Sachs, underwriter of Zynga's recent IPO filing. Chinese company TenCent was also in the running, but PopCap instead opted for a more complex deal with EA, selling up for an initial $750 million that could reach $1.3 billion if earnings targets are met over the next two years.

Gears of War 3 cleared for release in Germany

Microsoft looks set to publish a Gears of War game in Germany for the first time after regional classification body the BPJM cleared the 18-rated, third entry in Epic’s shooter series for release without any cuts. Microsoft opted not to publish the first two games in the country due to its strict anti-violent game stance. Imported PEGI-rated versions of Gears 1 and 2 were subject to regulations which forbid all press coverage and marketing, although retailers were theoretically still able to sell them to consumers who asked.

THQ CEO: New consoles likely to focus on services over technology

THQ boss Brian Farrell expects the next generation of consoles - if there is one – to be defined by their focus on service provision rather than raw technical power. Speaking at GamesBeat 2011, he told VentureBeat he also thinks Apple and Google are set to muscle in on the action. "We believe Apple is going to be there, Google is going to be there," Farrell said. "Our view is that the next generation of consoles, if there are consoles, are going to be less about technology and more about service orientation of the gamer."

LA Noire tops Japanese chart

New western developed games storm the software chart as PSP returns to the top of the hardware rankings.

Newly released western developed titles also took the next three places on the chart. PS3 exclusive Infamous 2 entered at number two with 33,474 units sold, ahead of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Earth Defence Force Insect Armageddon, which shifted 30,189 and 17,817 copies respectively.

Opinion: What does PopCap get out of the EA deal?

It's pretty obvious what EA has won, but how does PopCap stand to gain?

It could only have been EA, of course. Early reports said that Zynga had bowed out of the reckoning, balking at an asking price that ended up in a deal that last night became clear was worth $750 million. Besides, PopCap's surely too big for Zynga to absorb into its fleshy sides. No other gaming company has the heft and the ambition to even think about taking PopCap in.

Bushnell: California will be bankrupt in two years

During his keynote address at the GamesBeat conference in San Francisco, the Atari founder was in typically bullish mood. "The public school system with its bureaucracy and unions and bullshit are stuck," he said. "The pressure is building. There will be an earthquake. That will happen with the bankruptcy of California in two years. There is no chance California will fix itself with unfunded pensions and runaway public sector costs. It’s going to be like Greece." Bushnell has yet to reveal much of substance about his latest project, a suite of games for the classroom called Speed To Learn, and says he will only do so when his prediction comes true and draconian cuts to education ensue. "Am I an ambulance chaser? No," he said. "I will take advantage of an opportunity, called predicting the future."

Red Faction: Armageddon review

Has Volition built a game worthy of its destructive tech?

Videogames have always found it easier to explore the joy of destruction than the joy of creation. It’s a fact hard-coded into Red Faction: Armageddon’s control scheme. One button is allocated to repairing the world around you. Squeeze it and protagonist Darius Mason will extend his hand, wizard-like, while broken bridges, smashed computer terminals and fallen walls reassemble themselves before him. By contrast, almost every other button on the controller is used to tear down the world that Volition has created for Mason to exist in.

Video: Tim Schafer's Sesame Street pitch

When Schafer announced Double Fine's next project, Sesame Street: Once Upon A Monster, at E3 last month it was widely assumed that it was the studio's legacy of playful humour that got it the gig. Instead, as the below video shows, Schafer actually had to endure an arduous pitch meeting with one of the toughest executives in the business. And, as if we didn't already over-identify with Cookie Monster, we also zone out when we play with those executive toys.

Opinion: Better games through playtesting

But the process can be tough. Graham McAllister charts the five stages of grief playtesting can put developers through.

Good games are created through playtesting. These are not my words but those of legendary game designer Jesse Schell, as stated in his excellent book, The Art of Game Design. He goes even further by saying that playtesting is not only good for a game, it’s necessary in order to make a good game.

Microsoft, Zynga and Facebook face off in StarCraft II tournament

StarCraft II shoutcaster Sean "Day[9]" Plott has formed the After Hours Gaming League, which will see some of the most high-profile tech companies in the world face off in an eight-team tournament. The idea came from an in-house StarCraft II tournament at Facebook to which Plott was invited, after which Facebook suggested it be expanded to include other companies. Amazon, Dropbox, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Yelp and Zynga are all on board, with the $5,000 grand prize donated to the winner's chosen charity. The tournament began on July 5, and the grand final, at Facebook's Palo Alto campus on August 19, will be streamed live on Justin.tv, Day9.tv, and Facebook Live.

Sony fixes PlayStation Plus issues

Sony has confirmed that issues affecting the free one-month subscription to PlayStation Plus that formed part of its Welcome Back programme have been resolved. The free period was not expiring, leaving those who had opted to purchase a full subscription unable to access the service's content. "The issue with free memberships not expiring on time has been fixed," writes PSN product manager James Thorpe on the PlayStation Blog, "so anyone that upgraded to a paid Plus membership will now have access to all the Plus content on the Store." Sony has also added The Behemonth's Castle Crashers to this month's list of free Plus content, and Thorpe also hints at a day-one Plus discount for Limbo, which is set for a PSN release on July 20.

Metacritic drops publication over "corrupt practices"

CVG reveals that Marc Doyle, co-founder of reviews aggregator Metacritic, has dropped one publication from his listings after uncovering evidence of corruption. "On one occasion I did discontinue my coverage of a publication's reviews because of what I considered to be corrupt practices," he said. "There are many reasons why I would drop somebody. There's corruption - people can be bought, absolutely."
