The Friday Game: Narrow

Blindness and madness converge in Maxim Schoemaker’s thrifty little fable.

Maxim Schoemaker is a game designer from the Netherlands, and his latest piece, Narrow, is wonderfully depressing. Narrow is a high-precision platformer about a man named Albert who can’t stop going into a mine to look for gold. It is also, according to an explanatory Tweet by Schoemaker himself, an examination of “the subjects greed and obsession”.

Richard Bartle: "Social games aren't social"

Yet, the online gaming pioneer argues, they will lead new audiences to play more and better games.

Richard Bartle, co-creator of the first virtual world, MUD, a multiplayer RPG played over ARPAnet from its release in 1978 (read our Making Of MUD article), is known for speaking his mind, but he hasn’t previously been particularly vocal about gaming’s current hot ticket, social games.

Inafune eyes Chinese market

Closing an insightful essay on the current state of the Japanese videogame industry – of which he is a long-standing critic – Capcom’s former head of R&D Keiji Inafune reveals that it is Chinese, not North American success that he is seeking with his two new companies, Comcept and Intercept. “It may be too late – or too hard – to tackle the US market at this point,” he writes. “The next big market is China. There I see many opportunities. My sights are on Asia.”

DC Universe Online adds microtransactions

Massively reports that Sony Online Entertainment’s PlayStation 3 and PC MMOG now has its own virtual store, the DC Universe Online Marketplace. It’s rather sparse at the moment, with just a few items for sale, though that is expected to change. With access to the game itself currently requiring a monthly subscription, the addition of microtransaction support raises the question of whether SOE is to join the recent rush of MMOGs which have switched to the free-to-play model. We’ve approached SOE for clarification.

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D review

Repetition betrays its bonus mode roots, but it's still a grisly pleasure.

Like its proto-Horde predecessor that debuted as an unlockable mode in Resident Evil 4, The Mercenaries is a time trial of violence, pitting the overmatched player against an endless stream of slow, relentless enemies. You shoot, you run out of ammo, and you spend the latter half of the round trying to escape via rooftops and catwalks, in a desperate attempt to avoid the zero score that awaits anyone who fails to survive until the end.

MumboJumbo files new PopCap motion

PopCap was ordered to pay fellow casual game developer MumboJumbo $7.3 million in damages last year, a court finding PopCap guilty of fraud, tortious interference and breach of contract. With both parties appealing the verdict and the case ongoing, MumboJumbo has filed a new motion to ensure it is compensated in the event that rumours of PopCap's acquisition or IPO come to fruition. Martin Rose, of MumboJumbo's attorneys Rose Walker, said: "[PopCap] has a responsibility to pay its debts. We just want to do everything we can to make sure that what the jury and the court called for is carried out. Depending on the terms of the reported sale, there may be no assets left in PopCap to satisfy the full judgement."

Tokyo Game Show in power-saving effort

The effects of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March continue to be felt, with the Tokyo area braced for a power shortage this summer. As a result, organisers of this year's Tokyo Game Show are targeting a 25 per cent reduction in energy consumption, replacing lights with LED bulbs, shutting off downward-moving escalators, and limit power available to exhibitors. This year's show runs from September 15 to 18 at the Makuhari Messe convention hall.

Valve makes Source SDK free

Team Fortress 2's transition to free-to-play prompts Valve to give away development kit for nothing.

The development kit for Valve's Source engine is now available for free, the developer has confirmed.

Gamers have in fact been able to play mods made using the engine without charge since the release last year of Valve's free co-op shooter Alien Swarm. Now Rock Paper Shotgun reports that the developer has gone further and made the Source SDK completely free, following the news earlier this week that multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2 was switching to the free-to-play model.
