Grip Entertainment's Digital Extra System (DES) engine has been incorporated into Unreal Engine 3, giving developers tools to rapidly add hundreds of NPCs to their games.
The engine has been added to UE3 as part of the Integrated Partners Program, and was used in a recent trailer for EA's Army Of Two: The 40th Day (above). As well as pedestrians, DES allows for animals to be dropped into a game at speed, with Grip saying its engine uses "a fraction of the computing resources of standard game NPCs."

Attempts to download one of those games is met with an error message.

The game may have jabbed a hot brand into the eye of social gaming, but is the joke on its creator?
Marcel Duchamp had his urinal. Ian Bogost has his cows. And while the grand old man of conceptual art wanted to make a complex point about art in the 20th century, hanging a utilitarian piece of porcelain in an art gallery, Bogost just started out making fun of social games. But it wasn’t long before this Georgia Tech professor and distinguished academic found himself knee deep in Cow Clicker.
Otto Berkes, the last of the four Xbox founders at Microsoft, is set to leave the firm after 18 years of service.
The Seattle Times reports that Berkes tendered his resignation yesterday. Along with Ted Hase, Seamus Blackley and Kevin Bachus, who left in 2006, 2002 and 2001 respectively, Berkes was part of the group that first persuaded Microsoft to enter the console market with the suggestion of a "DirectX box", which would eventually become the Xbox, released in 2001.

Set for autumn, the update will add multitasking and background processing, as well as push notifications. It also includes support for new APIs, which will give developers access to a device's camera, compass and gyroscope, as well as stored information including contacts and calendars, according to Gamasutra.

Mojang, developer of indie PC smash Minecraft, has revealed that the upcoming Android version of the game will be released first on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play.
Speaking to Gamasutra, the studio confirmed that the mobile version of Minecraft - which is also headed to iOS devices - will be tweaked to better fit smartphones. In the case of Xperia Play, that means customised controls to make use of the device’s d-pad, touchpads and face buttons.
The developers at Korea's Bluehole Studios realise it’s not enough to simply lure players to upcoming MMOG Tera by dressing their female avatars more scandalously than the competition’s (even though they arguably succeed); such a contentious selling point only accounts for half the game’s potential audience anyway. MMOGs require monthly subscriptions, and you can’t expect players to juggle many concurrently.

Enjmin was founded in 2001 and is based in Angoulême, a city in the south west of France. It offers a two-year Masters degree in Games and Interactive Media as well as PhD research programmes in Game Design, Interaction Design, Sound Design, and Ubiquitous Game and Ambient Intelligence. The school is part of the Conservatory of Arts and Trades (CNAM) and is in partnership with the Universities of La Rochelle and Poitiers as well as a long list of companies in the audiovisual and game sectors.
The School of Audio Engineering was founded in 1976 and introduced a previously unheard of focus on hands-on learning. It now spans 55 colleges across 26 countries and, since the turn of the millennium, includes a number of Qantm colleges in Europe and Australia. Its game design degree sees students specialise in either programming or animation and graphics, with both branches learning about development and design within the context of their focus.
The Centre for Digital Entertainment is a collaborative doctoral programme that encompasses the University of Bath, Bournemouth University and a broad range of industry partners who take on students for the majority of their research projects. It’s an interesting setup that sees those learning becoming a functioning part of the industry almost immediately, while providing developers with the resources they need to further their own R&D.
