Oracle Throws Sun's Wonderland Down the Rabbit Hole

Oracle, sensibly enough from Oracle’s point-of-view, has turned off the tap of development resources on Sun’s Project Wonderland, the 100% Java open source toolkit for creating collaborative 3D virtual worlds. However, a core group of diehard Wonderlanders means to keep the project going and is scouting out for-project and non-profit options for becoming self-sustaining.

The iPad Is the Ultimate Thin Client

In my earlier post, when I railed against the iPad, it was mostly personal disappointment and letdown.  I was disappointed by the technical specs, most notably the aspect ratio, and the exclusion of USB, HDMI, and webcams.  Those items can all be added on in later iterations (which I firmly believe they will – perhaps [...] Related posts:

Andreessen's Makara Launches Cloud Computing Platform

After months under the radar, Makara on Tuesday unveiled a brand new approach to cloud computing's most difficult problem: application deployment and management. Rather than retrofit system management software designed for traditional application environments to the cloud, Makara's Cloud Application Platform leverages the virtual layer to allow developers to rapidly deploy, scale and monitor applications in cloud environments. The product is freely available today as a developer release at www.makara.com. "The widespread adoption of cloud computing is hitting a wall in terms of ROI because companies are not able to effectively manage applications, both inside and outside the enterprise, in a cloud environment. No one's going to run mission-critical apps without management, not in the data center and definitely not in the cloud," said Tim Guleri, Managing Director of Sierra Ventures. "Makara's Cloud Application Platform provides that missing link, enabling developers to deploy their apps and make them work with full management capabilities. Makara will get the cloud past the ROI hurdle."

The Death of Cloud Computing the Birth of Dream Computing

I do dream in color, not always vivid color, but color just the same. Today, I was awakened by one of my 5 boys in the middle of a great dream about the future. In my dream, I was in a big white room just as a door was opening and someone was about to walk in. Who was that? That's when I was awakened. Don't you hate dream interruption? Or Idruption? Quick note, I heard the iPad comes with an Idruption finisher, those guys at Apple are so innovative. What I do recall from my dream was that it was the summer of 2012, and Jeff Bezos, Paul Sagan and I were celebrating the 2 year anniversary of the merger of our three companies. There was a lot of talk about how 50% of the Fortune 1000 had shut down their data centers and moved all their operations onto our Dream Cloud. So much for that Gartner prediction -"By 2012, 20 percent of businesses will own no IT assets." The other thing that was clear from the conversation was that Dream Computing as a category had completely replaced the term Cloud Computing.

Dear Apple...So?

Here's yet another well written blog by Rachel Luxemburg that looks like a petition to Steve Jobs. So?

Such write-ups won't have any effect onApple's decision about Flash Player.  It's a cold blooded decision, and if the real reason for not letting FP on iPhone OS is to keep control of the applications and have a cut from the iStore, writing blogs and I'm also a big fan of Adobe software typing this comment on MBP and want Flash Player to be on iPhone and iPad. So?

Open letters won't help. Begging won't help. For some reason, Leonard Cohen's words come to mind:

Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or Id crawl to you baby
And Id fall at your feet
And Id howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And Id claw at your heart
And Id tear at your sheet
Id say please, please
Im your man

If Flash Player really performs poorly on iPhone OS, as John Gruber describes , than it can be resolved only by two people: Apple's and Adobe's CEOs.

Lee Brimelow, a respected Adobe evangelist published a really cool blog showing how some Web sites will look like if the Flash Player support is turned off in the Web browser. So? There's an iPhone version of CNN that shows videos using Apple's QuickTime instead of Flash Player.

If Apple will insist on having 100% control as to what software can run on iPhone/iPad, they'll force third-party developers to bend and find the way to play by the rules. If you are a small software vendor, do you want to ignore the market of 75 million of hot devices (iPhones)?  Even if you are a large software vendor, you still don't want to ignore this market, and Adobe found a brilliant way to get into developing software for iPhone OS and offering it in iStore in ActionScript in CS5.

Something's gotta give.

iPad on Ulitzer - I’ll Buy iPad. But What For?

I’m proud to consider myself an upper middle class American . Why am I so proud about it? Because I haven’t been born in an upper middle class American family. I came to the USA 18 years ago with $200 in my pocket on a visitor’s visa. Don’t rush reporting on me to the Immigration authorities. I was legal in this country each and every day since. Then came the work visa (H1B), after that the green card, and back in 2001, I became an American citizen. Our family consists of me (silver 15” MacBook Pro), two sons (black 13” MacBook and a silver 13” MacBook) and my wife (post World War II Windows PC own by her employer, a filthy rich international bank). I also have an iPhone.

iPad on Ulitzer - iPad Carries Apple Chip

While the market figures out whether it wants one of those new iHyped Apple iPad tablets when they get here in March, what it would do with it if it got one, whether it will kill the Kindle, threaten netbooks or backfire on Apple, note that it’s the first time Apple is using its own chip, supposedly giving purpose to its 2008 PA Semi acquisition.

Sun Finally Belongs to Oracle

Oracle finally closed on its delayed acquisition of Sun Tuesday, leaving local entities to shift for themselves according to local laws and sidestepping MySQL creator Monty Widenius’ hopes of Russian and Chinese regulators stalling the merger. Widenius will now presumably revert to his quixotic Plan B and appeal the European Commission’s clearance last week, a green light that looked really iffy there for a while.

iPad - What It Means For Developers

Today was a historic day in computing history. While the techno-geeks will argue for the next several months what this really means and what the Apple iPad is missing or why it’s only a large screen iPod Touch, I’m going to be focused on what I think this really means to some key industries and how Appcelerator can help. From my perspective, web developers are talking up and overwhelmingly are planning new application experiences for the new iPad. We surveyed just a small sample of our community of developers and found that over 90% of them plan on building an iPad application in the next 12 months.

Apple Leads the Pack of Application Stores

Netsize previews survey results at M-Days mobile conference and trade show in Munich, Germany

Munich, Germany, January 28, 2010 -- Netsize, a leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today revealed the first results of the Mobile Trends Survey 2010. Drawing from an online survey of 1,000+ professionals and practitioners, the survey provides insights into key trends that top the industry agenda, including the advance of mobile applications stores, progress towards global mobile commerce and the pivotal importance of mobile as a means to bridge our virtual and physical worlds.

Using the occasion of M-Days - one of Europe's biggest mobile industry events and exhibitions held in Munich, Germany - Netsize provided conference attendees, industry influencers and key bloggers a sneak peek into the controversial survey results, starting with respondents' views on app store leaders and the enablers that give them and their offers the competitive edge.

According to the survey, the vast majority (87 percent) of respondents believe the Apple App Store will be the most successful app store in the mobile space. Google's Android Market is a distant second (60 percent), followed by Nokia's Ovi Store (30 percent) and RIM's BlackBerry App World (27 percent). Surprisingly, applications stores run by mobile operators finished low in the list, indicating that platform providers and handset makers may well dominate the space for a time to come.

When asked to rate the unique selling proposition of application stores over other software distribution and sales channels, 65 percent of respondents put convenience ("everything in one place") at the top of the list. This was followed by compatibility "software applications specific to the device"), choice ("a long tail of thousands of applications to choose from"), and ease of payment ("operator billing, for example").

Netsize, provider of operator billing solutions to most of the large mobile device vendors for their application stores, released the application store survey findings to the stage for a lively discussion of the future of mobile and the role of software application stores during "Mobile Trends 2020, Mobile Research and App-Commerce: What Comes Next in Europe?". The M-Days session was led and moderated by Peggy Anne Salz, mobile thought leader and MSearchGroove Founder and Chief Analyst.

The complete mobile trends survey results - which cover topics related to mobile entertainment, mobile marketing, mobile commerce, mobile payments and mobile convergence - will be released as part of the Netsize Guide 2010, a comprehensive mobile industry analysis and almanac published by Netsize and written by MSearchGroove's Salz. Netsize will launch the Netsize Guide 2010 on February 16, 2010 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Apple iPad Impressive, but Kindle Not Dead Yet

Apple’s iPad announcement is big news. It’s a robust tablet form factor that is a half-inch thick and weighs 1.5 pounds, with a 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen IPS LCD display that supports 1024x768 VGA video. The ebook implementation is everything one would expect. The application can be downloaded from the App Store and the content is managed by the “iTunes” platform, so it seamlessly integrates e-book with the other popular personal content. All iBooks are stored on your Bookshelf. As you would expect, all books are displayed on a sharp, color screen with many personalization options.
