EC Clears Oracle’s Acquisition of Sun

Thursday, January 21, 2010 – The European Commission this morning waved Oracle’s $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems through without any strings attached. It’s been blocking the deal since September because Sun owns the popular open source database MySQL, one of the legs of the fabled LAMP stack, and was certain Oracle would roll over and crush it.

Using JSAPI with a JBoss SEAM Component

If you are using Actuate's JSAPI to run BIRT reports and you wish to pass parameters from a SEAM component this can be done very easily. In addition you can combine SEAM remoting with the JSAPI to do some interesting things. For example assume we create a SEAM component that retrieves report parameters that we want to use with the JSAPI. The component would look similar to this:

SAP ERP on iPhones

I met with a team of mobile software developers this week that have developed a fascinating mobile technology that enables the user to access ALL of SAP's ERP and other SAP components on an iPhone. I am particularly intrigued because I have never seen a mobile application that can quickly enable an entire ERP with only a 25 MB download and a 15 minute set-up. The use case would be any SAP user or expert that needs to access any page or component of SAP while out of the office. It is all there on the iPhone. I was very impressed. Most often only traveling sales or service people are prioritized for enterprise mobile applications, but this technology will enable anyone in the company that needs access to the SAP system to simply login with their iPhone and go to work.

Wilson Kerr Launches "Location Based Services" Topic on Ulitzer

The power of Location allows information (including advertising) to be delivered to consumers most-able to act upon this information, based on their real-time proximity to the physical locations where transactions occur. Location is changing the very nature of advertising and mobile Location Based Services (LBS) are expected to see a 45% increase in revenue generated in 2010. In the next 5 years, more people will gain access to the web on their phones than on PCs. Since consumers carry their phones with them, this is a game-changer for performance-based advertising. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Nokia, Apple, Amazon, Dell, Garmin, etc are all in the mix here and there is a lot at stake.

I am up late January 5th and have been awaiting the first news stories from the big Vegas Consumer Electronics Show (CES) about the new Google phone, the Nexus One. I just Googled up the first piece (from 33 minutes ago) from, of all sources, the Montreal Gazette. In the final few sentences they capture the essence of the real disruptive innovation threat this bold Google Phone poses to business as usual for US Carriers and, I would imagine, people are applauding!
