What is a SatNav? I would define it as a small pocket sized computer, with a built-in GPS receiver, running navigational software on a lightweight but efficient Operating System. Indispensable in today's age, but adding to the number of small technological marvels that need to be carried on your person. Unless you have a utility belt or do not worry about carrying a rucksack, then it won't be an issue.
I recently gave talks on the behavior of different JPA frameworks at W-JAX(Germany) and TheServerSide Java Symposium (Prague). As some people have asked me, I am publishing the samples as well. I would also give away the eclipse project, however with all the third party libraries I am sure I will end up not doing it legally correct. Additionally I can add some comments on the samples and why they are as they are :-) .
In a conversation last week I was asked my point of view with regard to the number of applications on the Apple App Store and what I believe to expect next. Here is a portion of my reply... I am not even going to state the current number of applications available, as this will be out of date immediately, but one can easily predict that this number will continue to grown rapidly, even with the large number of application on the App Store already. Some would suggest that saturation point is near for the App Store?

Everyone knows that the longevity and ultimate success of a platform lies in the developers willing to create on that platform. Creating a healthy developer ecosystem in which both the developer and the platform vendor can grow and prosper is very important. No one knows this better than Microsoft. It has long been their mantra that “developers, developers, developers” are the key to success. With most of the new large scale websites and platforms being launched on open source platforms and now the cloud, this is becoming even more important.

MySQL co-developer Monty Widenius, said to have the business sense of a child by MySQL’s old management, and his hired help Florian Mueller, who made a killing on his MySQL stock when Sun lost its mind and bid a billion dollars for the Scandinavian company, paying 20 times revenues, are now insisting that Oracle should be made to divest MySQL so it can take over a fading Sun.
This may feel like Christmas when all you get is ties but Samsung is launching its own smartphone operating system called bada, which it expects to compete with Android and LiMo. It’s not yet clear exactly what it is. Could be still another Linux variant. More likely it’s Samsung’s proprietary operating system with a new front-end. Samsung says it’ll be open so third-party developers can write to it and it’ll be backed by an app store. Carriers will be able to customize the thing. The first bada-based phones are scheduled to be out in 2H10. An SDK will be available in December 1. The word bada means ocean in Korean. Unfortunately it’s also a Shia Moslem concept of God.

Several options exist for ensuring high availability for your mission-critical applications. Those options may be hardware- or software-based, and may also vary considerably in terms of project or enterprise scope and in terms of cost and complexity.

This initiative reduced the company’s storage capacity requirements by 66%, which also reduced storage administration time. In addition, by consolidating onto a single, highly virtualized 3PAR InServ Storage Server, TheLadders.com was able to eliminate the use of separate arrays for different applications and reliance on costly consulting services.
War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations.

2002 documentary about the April 2002 Venezuelan coup attempt which briefly deposed Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. A television crew from Ireland's national broadcaster, RT happened to be recording a documentary about Chávez during the events of April 11, 2002. Shifting focus, they followed the events as they occurred. During their filming, the crew recorded images of the events that they say contradict explanations given by Chávez's opposition, the private media, the US State Department, and then White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer. The documentary says that the coup was the result of a conspiracy between various old guard and anti-Chávez factions within Venezuela and the United States.
Before his death in 212 B.C., Archimedes pens some of his most important treatises and equations onto a collection of papyrus scrolls in Greek. These include some of the most profound and cutting edge Mechanical Theorems to date. Thought to be lost but never forgotten the battered manuscript of parchment leaves was found hidden under the writings of an ancient prayer book. It is said that if the manuscript had been found sooner, the world would be a very different place.

VMware figures to push virtualization onto more desktops with the release next week of its next-generation View 4.0, advertised as the only purpose-built desktop virtualization solution in the industry. The gussied-up vSphere-based widgetry, a gateway to the desktop as a managed service, is supposed to overcome the barriers of user experience, cost and scale that have so far limited the adoption of desktop virtualization to what VMware calls a “small niche group of industries.” VMware claims View’s performance will match the most demanding environment while reducing desktop TCO by as much as 50%.
Poor beaten-up Sun Microsystems confided the financial results of its September quarter to the SEC on Friday and they weren’t pretty. Sun was supposed to be part of Oracle by now and not washing its linen in public anymore but the European Commission hasn’t sanctioned the union, and isn’t expected to now unless Oracle does something about Sun property MySQL. What the EC wants exactly isn’t clear.
