Platform as a service (PaaS) is a big piece of the cloud computing puzzle, the other pieces being Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and Application software as a service (SaaS). PaaS enables the delivery of solution frameworks and components as on-demand, pay-as-you-go services. How Cool is the Cloud?

Today, we are an early cohabitant of “The Cloud”, thanks in no small part to our adoption of all of the cool cloud enablers mentioned above. But to understand how cool cloud computing really is, you first have to understand that the cloud is still in its infancy, and already, it’s a cool kid. It’s kind of like that ten year old who hangs around with friends that can drive.

DOJ Waves Oracle-Sun Through

Oracle said late Thursday that its $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun was okay with the Justice Department. That leaves the European Commission, which has until September 3 to decide whether it’s going to give the deal a green light too or launch a Phase II investigation that would ruin Oracle’s plans to close the acquisition by the end of this month.

SpringSource Adds Grease to Java Cloud Skids

This is the clear path for open source and Java developers to the cloud. Microsoft will have its hands full just keeping the .NET developers and operators on the farm, so to speak. SpringSource made headlines last week when VMware scooped up the Java infrastructure and management firm for $420 million in a move to breed easier cloud migration. Now, the spotlight is on the San Mateo, Calif. company once again as it leverages one of its own recent cloud industry acquisitions.

My World for a Cable!

You can probably feel my pain, when I say that one of the worst things to do when you have such a great mobile device at hand, is to rely on a larger heaver device aka the laptop, to do things that are day to day necessities. For the average mobile worker, email and access to PIM data is the killer app, and any smartphone worth its weight (or lack of it) will be able to do that more than adequately.

Nuclear Fusion: The Star In The Jar

Back in 2002 Professor Rusi Taleyarkhan - who was then based in the United States' Oak Ridge National Laboratory - claimed that he had discovered a way of re-creating natural Nuclear Fusion here on earth, with a device called the 'star in the jar'. For decades scientists have been trying to achieve this because, unlike conventional nuclear power, nuclear fusion would have no waste and the fuel required is hydrogen, something our world is covered in, in the form of water. This would truly be a big step for mankind if it were true, but Taleyarkhan's detractors shot holes in his science from the word go, and this film does the same.

Encounters at the End of the World

Herzog's Encounters is a somewhat meandering trip to the Southernmost place on Earth, inspired by footage of Antarctica's marine world taken by a friend of his. From the early images of crammed passengers on a cargo plane to the buckethead testing of what to do to get to the outhouse in a blinding blizzard to absolutely stunning footage of underwater life to a wayward penguin's seemingly suicidal venturing into mountainous country, Herzog has fashioned together a commentary on life in one of our harshest environments and the quality and experience of what it is like. An ethereal, primal musical score accompanies the picture, which is narrated by Herzog, like his fabulous Grizzly Man, but more muted and ponderous.
