iPhone “Virtual Fridge Notes”

The new application makes use of a femtocell's ability to detect home presence, sending someone a reminder message as soon as he or she arrives home. ip.access' "fridge notes" service works on any SMS capable handset, but the new iPhone version actually displays the messages on a virtual fridge, allowing the recipient to manage them just like real fridge notes. The message, which can be composed and sent using Facebook, can be unpeeled, moved to a corner of the fridge door, or removed altogether if the message is no longer relevant.

Bodrum Mess and a Mayor Missing in Action

I thank you very much for taking the time to bring to everyones attention the mess in Bodrum and the lack of action from the Mayor of Bodrum, Kocadon. I live in Chicago and have a summer/retirement home in Yalikavak and I have to admit I have been amazed at how much the Mayor of Bodrum is getting away with. He is only available for photo shoots and media blitz but when it comes to hard work the man is a ghost...

In a major upgrade to its software as a service (SaaS) that connects companies with their field workforces, Argentina’s Movimiento ATM has integrated the Perst™ Lite all-Java embedded database from McObject® in client software for roaming employees’ BlackBerry, Nokia and other popular smartphones. The integration keeps users more up-to-date through faster data access, and also enhances client software reliability. Perst Lite also slashed the development time of Movimiento’s new Salesforce Solution product by replacing “homegrown” data management code with a proven commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) embedded database system, Movimiento's general manager said.

An Itty-Bitty Chip Could Slash a Data Center’s Energy Bill

Imagine a data center chock full of heterogeneous equipment and running hot. That should be an easy exercise since they all are. But now it’s important to stop the waste and reduce energy consumption. Where do you start? Well, it might be nice to whittle the problem down to size and figure out what in that sea of servers and whatnot are the biggest offenders.

New Evernote App For The iPhone OS 3.0

The new functionality in Evernote 3.0 was achievable thanks to technologies made available in the iPhone 3.0 software, such as the iPhone Clipboard, MapKit, CoreData and others. The iPhone Clipboard allows for advanced integrations between Evernote and other iPhone applications. MapKit was used to create the new Map View, which plots notes on a map and filters them based on map zoom level. CoreData allows the application to display a smooth-scrolling list of thumbnails for tens, hundreds, or thousands of notes without requiring the user to reload the page.

Shameless Self Promotion

I have set up a number of conglomeration sites in the last week, which I thought I would share with the interested.  One relates to books, one to articles, and one to speaking.

The first is FiledBy, at http://www.filedby.com/author/bill_sempf/.  It is a managed site with books of mine that are still in print.  Neat concept, and I look forward to using it.

The second is SpeakerSite.  Set up by my friend Artie Isaac, it is a conglomeration of a lot of speakers on different topics.  My site is http://www.speakersite.com/profile/BillSempf and I have posted a video to my recent cloud computing presentation.  After my C#4.0 presentation Tuesday, I'll post a video to that too.

The third is Ulitzer.  This one is pretty cool.  Back in 2000 -2001 timeframe, I wrote a numbero f articles for Sys-Con media.  After I started my contract with MSDN I kinda dropped off their map, but I didn't lose touch with the people involved.  Now, it turns out they are a big power in publising for cloud computing, along with their other assets.  Anyway, they have these customizable author sites, and mine is http://williamasempf.ulitzer.com/.  I'll be adding articles and linking up this blog to it shortly.

Anyway, I usually just write about technology, and this is not specifically VB technology, but it is cool use of the media so I thought I would share.

Dell Believed on Acquisition Trail

Dell now has ~$10 billion in its jeans to spend on an acquisition or two. It raised another billion this week selling bonds. That’s the second time in two months it’s sold debt, not something it’s done much of in years past. It also has IBM’s poached M&A chief David Johnson, but since IBM sued him to enforce his non-compete he’s off “studying the company” while a court decides if and when he can practice his skills.

Oracle’s Secret Plan for Sun

If Oracle hasn’t been exactly forthcoming with its reportedly three-year plan for Sun, it’s because it’s still trying to figure out exactly what it is. Like what it’s really going to do about the Sparc chip, for instance. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, who’s orchestrating things even if co-president Chuck Phillips is nominally in charge of integration from the Oracle side, is reportedly determined to exploit the cloud phenomenon and turn Oracle-Sun into a cloud-based company by making sure he’s got Oracle’s whole software stack on network-based appliances built by Sun.
