Competitive Decision Making: #DigitalTransformation | @ThingsExpo #DX #IoT #M2M #API

The winning trinity in competitive decision-making includes people, ideas and things according to the renowned military strategist John Boyd. Although competitive decision-making is not yet an Olympic sport, it affects us all. Leaders (people) must become trained experts at using digital technologies to make fast decisions. Leaders must use the right strategies and methodologies (ideas) to make wise decisions fast, and they must collect the needed data and analyze it fast enough using the best solutions (things). If any component of this trinity is weak, it will be hard to compete.

[session] Public Cloud Benefits | @CloudExpo @Cloudistics #API #Serverless #CloudNative

You know you need the cloud, but you’re hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You’re looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you’re concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies.

[session] WebRTC for Edge Computing | @ThingsExpo @NTTCom #IoT #M2M #RTC WebRTC

Recently, WebRTC has a lot of eyes from market. The use cases of WebRTC are expanding - video chat, online education, online health care etc. Not only for human-to-human communication, but also IoT use cases such as machine to human use cases can be seen recently. One of the typical use-case is remote camera monitoring. With WebRTC, people can have interoperability and flexibility for deploying monitoring service. However, the benefit of WebRTC for IoT is not only its convenience and interoperability. It has lots of potential to address current issues around IoT - security, connectivity and so on - based on P2P technology. It will become a key-component especially in edge computing use cases, in his view.

The Four Core Capabilities of #DevOps | @DevOpsSummit #Serverless #CloudNative

DevOps is good for organizations. According to the soon to be released State of DevOps Report high-performing IT organizations are 2X more likely to exceed profitability, market share, and productivity goals. But how do they do it? How do they use DevOps to drive value and differentiate their companies? We recently sat down with Nicole Forsgren, CEO and Chief Scientist at DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) and lead investigator for the State of DevOps Report, to discuss the role of measurement in DevOps Success. From years of research into DevOps operations and culture, Forsgren and her colleagues have found that success depends on improving two key outcomes—speed and stability. These, she says, are crucial for driving improvement in organizational performance and value.

[slides] Machine Learning | @CloudExpo #BigData #AI #ML #DX #SmartCities

Detecting internal user threats in the Big Data eco-system is challenging and cumbersome. Many organizations monitor internal usage of the Big Data eco-system using a set of alerts. This is not a scalable process given the increase in the number of alerts with the accelerating growth in data volume and user base. Organizations are increasingly leveraging machine learning to monitor only those data elements that are sensitive and critical, autonomously establish monitoring policies, and to detect anomalous usage based on past usage.

The Future of Automation | @DevOpsSummit #AI #ML #DX #DevOps #DigitalTransformation

We've all read the dystopian fiction, watched those apocalyptic movies and heard a myriad of prophetic warnings heralding our obsolescence. Surely now we're just a couple of years from flipping the switch on a Skynet of our own making and condemning mankind to the annals of history. Actually, we're not entirely sure what the future holds, but it's probably not fire and brimstone. For detractors and naysayers of technology, could there be a more fitting image than Terminator 2's opening shot? A hulking, skeletal, humanoid machine crushing a human skull beneath its foot. Listening to ‘techno-skeptics' can sure make it feel as though that's the end which inevitably awaits us. If we continue down our current path of imbuing machines with increasing levels of autonomy, learning abilities and artificial intelligence, eventually we'll inadvertently construct our own obsolescence - if not destruction! We must be careful, unless we want to find ourselves subjugated by a machine army...

Industry 4.0 and #DigitalTransformation | @ThingsExpo #AI #IoT #M2M #BigData #Analytics #SmartCities

It seems as if the whole world wants to talk about Industry 4.0 (or Industrie 4.0 if you prefer the European spelling). Industry 4.0 is embodied by two main buzz worthy topics known as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data / Advanced Analytics. The "4.0" references what many consider to be the fourth major industrial revolution. The first being the utilization of machines, the second involving assembly lines and mass production, the third employing automation, and now the fourth: cyber physical systems (machines communicating with one another). That modest single digit pales in comparison to the other numbers that are bantered about when talking about Industry 4.0. Most estimate that there will be 22.5 Billion IoT devices by 2021 - or roughly three for every one person on earth. Along with that is the prediction that $4.8 trillion will be invested in IoT between 2016 and 2021. In many ways these numbers are mind-numbing and hard to translate into practical understanding.

[slides] #IoT and Medical Device Safety | @ThingsExpo #AI #DX #SmartCities

Consumers increasingly expect their electronic "things" to be connected to smart phones, tablets and the Internet. When that thing happens to be a medical device, the risks and benefits of connectivity must be carefully weighed. Once the decision is made that connecting the device is beneficial, medical device manufacturers must design their products to maintain patient safety and prevent compromised personal health information in the face of cybersecurity threats. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Clark Fortney, Software Engineer at Battelle, discussed how designing safe connected medical devices begins with systematically analyzing cyber threats against desired functionality and making smart hardware/software architectural choices accordingly. Memory protection strategies, functional isolation, runtime checks, programming oversight, and vulnerability assessment testing are some of the key methods to increase the cybersecurity of a medical device, or any connected device that performs important functions.

Legacy Modernization and Cloud | @CloudExpo #API #CloudNative #Agile #DX

If you are thinking about moving applications off a mainframe and over to open systems and the cloud, consider these guidelines to prioritize what to move and what to eliminate. On the surface, mainframe architecture seems relatively simple: A centrally located computer processes data through an input/output subsystem and stores its computations in memory. At the other end of the mainframe are printers and terminals that communicate with the mainframe through protocols. For all of its apparent simplicity, mainframe architecture can be extraordinarily complex. Mainframes process thousands of transactions per second and require an extensive infrastructure to house and maintain them. The hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of terminals (think of a bank’s ATM network) require a message routing scheme that can quickly prioritize and route transaction requests.

Does Your Company Require a B2B Integration Tool | @CloudExpo #BI #API #Cloud

Technology integration is complex and an evergreen business challenge for IT teams. Enterprises setup manual & point to point connections to exchange data from business partners. However, data disruptions emerge when the business IT systems expand and prevents organizations from sharing data with partners. Information exchange with this approach requires more resources and manpower is required. For such scenarios, information solution experts recommend to use the B2B data exchange tool to support the Electronic Data Interchange. However, enterprises are struck in a dilemma to go for an in house or a b2b solution. This blog will help you in deciding whether to develop an in-house solution or a dedicated information solution
