Cloud is a lot more pervasive than one may have imagined and in this article, we will focus on the various ways in which cloud technology is making home security systems robust and impenetrable. The term ‘Internet of Things’ gets thrown around quite a lot when we talk about cloud technology in domains outside of computer systems. But cloud technology in areas like home security is not merely about IoT. Cloud is a lot more pervasive than one may have imagined and in this article, we will focus on the various ways in which cloud technology is making home security systems robust and impenetrable.
In the run up to our latest release of capabilities for developers, I sat down with David Yang, a senior engineer here at PagerDuty who’s seen our internal architecture evolve from a single monolithic codebase to dozens of microservices. He’s the technical lead for our Incident Management – People team, which owns the services that deliver alert notifications to all 8,000+ PagerDuty customers. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Clark Fortney, Software Engineer at Battelle, will discuss how programming oversight using key methods can increase the cybersecurity of medical device code to prevent weaknesses and vulnerabilities from being introduced into a device. These include automatic code scanners, runtime analysis, following coding standards, and binary analysis tools to monitor for unexpected behavior.

As pervasive as cloud technology is -- and as persuasive as the arguments are for using it -- the cloud has its limits. Some companies will always have security concerns about storing data in the cloud and certain high-transaction applications will always be better suited for on-premises storage. Those statements were among the bottom-line takeaways delivered at Cloud Expo this week, a three day, bi-annual event focused on cloud technologies, adoption and associated challenges.

The balanced scorecard (BSC) is a tool that organizations have used for many years to measure strategic, operational and financial performance. The concept behind the BSC is simple: a company and/or business unit prioritizes a set of 15 to 20 financial and non-financial metrics across four quadrants linked to the company’s market and operations strategy in order to measure and manage performance. While the BSC is a good organizing framework and remains relevant today, it needs a major shift to be effective in a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) world where traditional BSC measures don’t adequately gauge and predict performance.

Almost all of the luxury brands that we work with are somewhere on the long and winding road between multichannel and omnichannel. For outsiders, this seems to be a small step but in reality, this is an extremely complex transition. In the luxury industry, multichannel often means that the brands have created an online channel (sometimes completely outsourced) that is often developed and managed completely separately from the offline channel (brick-and-mortar stores) with only limited integration. Both channels use their own order and warehouse management platforms, logistical systems, and sometimes even ERP and CRM systems. Brick-and-mortar stores offered a luxurious shopping experience where customers could touch and feel the merchandise and provide immediate gratification. The online channel tried to attract customers with wide product selection, low prices, and additional content like product reviews and ratings.
In DevOps, those who can’t keep pace are often left behind. For many people leading DevOps initiatives over the past few years, this led to a painful choice of leaving security by the wayside. Many Waterfall-native approaches to security could not keep pace with their new DevOps-native requirements and they were shunned. Gene Kim and Josh Corman first sounded the death knell for security as we knew it during their 2012 RSA presentation, Security Is Dead. Long Live DevOps: IT at Ludicrous Speed. However, as with so many things in our world, necessity is the mother of invention. Leaving security out of the DevOps toolchain was not an option for some and unimaginable for others. Fast forward four years and things have changed dramatically. We are on the cusp of a new era of security that lives at ludicrous speed. Software-defined security is crossing the chasm into the mainstream.
