Docker Cloud is a hosted service for Docker Container Management, originally based on Tutum Cloud, which was acquired by Docker in October 2015. Sematext supported the deployment of Sematext Docker Agent on Tutum Cloud from the get-go, so naturally we were quick to add support for Docker Cloud as well. Docker Cloud is a container management service that supports multiple cloud providers such as Amazon, DigitalOcean, IBM Softlayer, MS Azure and Packet.net. This makes it much easier to switch Docker deployments to different cloud providers or use a mix of providers including on-premises nodes for hybrid cloud applications. The user interface in Docker Cloud makes it easy to manage nodes on all supported cloud platforms and is able to deploy application stacks in containers, defined in a “Stack YAML” file. This Stack files are very similar to Docker Compose files, but with additional options, e.g. to define deployment strategies for the containers. The graphical user interface helps to view and modify container configurations.

Drones are an interesting case study in the technology maturation process. Drones have actually been around for quite some time, even though the recent "lift-off" of commercial applications has vaulted the technology further into the spotlight. I've started seeing some incredible uses of the technology and how not only businesses will benefit, but people as well. For example, lifeguards and emergency responders have started flying drones as another means to quickly assist swimmers in trouble. By dropping a life jacket as soon as possible, distressed swimmers can get assistance quickly while further assistance is in pursuit of reaching the swimmer in the water. In the same vein, another reason lifeguards are flying drones is to identify and monitor other threats to beachgoers such as sharks. This will lead into drones enabling automatic warning systems when sharks get closer to the swim zones, and warn lifeguards to deploy means to both repel sharks and notify others in the surrounding area.

In simple terms, the Docker platform is all about making it easier to create, deploy and run applications by using containers. Containers let developers package up an application with all of the necessary parts, such as libraries and other elements it is dependent upon, and then ship it all out as one package. By keeping an app and associated elements within the container, developers can be sure that the apps will run on any Linux machine no matter what kind of customized settings that machine might have, or how it might differ from the machine that was used for writing and testing the code. This is helpful for developers because it makes it easier to work on the app throughout its life cycle.
