The World's Many IoTs | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #BigData #InternetOfThings

The Internet of Things is clearly many things: data collection and analytics, wearables, Smart Grids and Smart Cities, the Industrial Internet, and more. Cool platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Intel's Galileo and Edison, and a diverse world of sensors are making the IoT a great toy box for developers in all these areas. In this Power Panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, panelists discussed what things are the most important, which will have the most profound effect on the world, and what should we expect to see over the next couple of years.

Monetizing IoT: Show Me the Money! | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #BigData

The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing rapidly by extending current technologies, products and networks. By 2020, Cisco estimates there will be 50 billion connected devices. Gartner has forecast revenues of over $300 billion, just to IoT suppliers. Now is the time to figure out how you’ll make money – not just create innovative products. With hundreds of new products and companies jumping into the IoT fray every month, there’s no shortage of innovation. Despite this, McKinsey/VisionMobile data shows "less than 10 percent of IoT developers are making enough to support a reasonably sized team.”

Millenials Impact on Business Technology

The Millennial Generation, aged 18 to 34 is having an increased impact on business technology. Born into the age of the PC and early internet this demographic is more proficient and demanding of apps, devices and IT services than earlier generations. In the past progressive IT organizations would consider this group as a category to accommodate, making the company appealing to college recruits and new hires. More recently however, this generation is now mainstream with increased influence driving IT strategy. They now include partners at large firms, doctors that never used paper charts and executives making purchase decisions.

Bringing DevOps to Pay TV | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #IoT #Microservices

With live TV, there is no room for error. There’s no reset button. Any mistake can have a catastrophic effect on their brand. If during the World Series or the Super Bowl or a Presidential debate a system fails to handle the capacity or load – it would affect millions of people around the country. Simply put, it’s a front page news story waiting to happen. Continuous innovation is a concept that has taken hold with internet companies such as Amazon, Netflix, eBay, Google and countless other consumer tech companies, but is still a relatively new concept in the world of pay TV. Because consumers have been conditioned to expect continuous innovation from the technologies that they interact with every day - from website experiences to the operating software on their tablets - their expectations towards pay TV have evolved to expect the same cadence of new product and feature releases as their other consumer technology offers. Unfortunately, our industry has a lot of catching up to do.

API and DX Keynote By @Sandy_Carter | @ExpoDX #AI #IoT #IIoT #API #SmartCities #DigitalTransformation

Growth hacking is common for startups to make unheard-of progress in building their business. Career Hacks can help Geek Girls and those who support them (yes, that's you too, Dad!) to excel in this typically male-dominated world. Get ready to learn the facts: Is there a bias against women in the tech / developer communities? Why are women 50% of the workforce, but hold only 24% of the STEM or IT positions? Some beginnings of what to do about it! In her Day 2 Keynote at 17th Cloud Expo, Sandy Carter, IBM General Manager Cloud Ecosystem and Developers, and a Social Business Evangelist, will discuss why this matters, how innovation will benefit, and how to foster an interest in tech. Learn why women need to take risks and embrace failure to give them the courage to crash through the glass ceiling. Sandy will share some of her own experiences and advice with 5 career hacks to help women get ahead, because talent is not enough.

Customer Centricity Tips for Digital Transformation | @CloudExpo #Cloud

One of the most important tenets of digital transformation is that it’s customer-driven. In fact, the only reason technology is involved at all is because today’s customers demand technology-based interactions with the companies they do business with. It’s no surprise, therefore, that we at Intellyx agree with Patrick Maes, CTO, ANZ Bank, when he said, “the fundamental element in digital transformation is extreme customer centricity.” So true – but note the insightful twist that Maes added to the customer-driven digital mantra: extreme. In the context of digital transformation, then, what are some examples of customer centricity we would consider to be extreme? Here’s our take.

DevOps Is a Team Sport | @DevOpsSummit #APM #DevOps

I recently attended DevOpsDays Boston, where I had the pleasure of listening to a presentation by Katie Rose, a professional women’s football player. Her presentation on how her team works together to achieve their goals brought up the idea that DevOps is most definitely a team sport. While many of us were happy to leave our team sport activities at the middle or high school level, the lessons we learned from working together are becoming increasingly significant in today’s tech world.

Sensor-to-Server: Execute Locally, Communicate Globally… | @ThingsExpo #IoT

Being heavily entrenched in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology markets, I often have the opportunity to speak with customers, partners, and analysts about sensor-to-server communication and what technology advances are on the horizon that will benefit the industry. A few of the hot buttons right now are big data and predictive analytics. The idea of comparing data in motion (at the sensor level) to data at rest (in a big data server warehouse) with predictive analytics in the cloud is very appealing to many industrial customers. The problem the big data vendors have, however, is access to that data in motion at the sensor location. Legacy SCADA systems are inadequate, and there are very few options for the local execution of predictive analytics applications to apply changes actively in the field.

Connecting the Threads By @PSilvas | @ThingsExpo #IoT #Wearables

According to eMarketer.com, wearable usage will grow almost 60% in 2015 verses 2014. This year, almost 40 million U.S. adults will use wearables, including smartwatches and fitness trackers. And that’s only 16% of the penetrable market. They expect that number double in two years with close to 82 million adults wearing something connected by 2018. Almost two in five internet users by 2019. You probably think that it’ll be all those youngsters growing up with connected objects but over the next four years, older Americans will see the biggest growth with the flood of wearable health monitor devices. Don’t fret, I’m sure that new outfit for special occasions will monitor something. These connected wearables will soon be able to cover our body.

IoT Software Development and Delivery | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #API

The IoT trend brings rise to a plethora of new and useful services that enrich our lives, simplify it, or save us time and money. To provide these kind of connected – and complex – services, software companies must have three different software teams (at least!) and they have to deliver the different, integrated, service components across different platforms and devices. In addition, software upgrades must be coordinated across all environments to ensure service continuity. Only an integrated DevOps platform can provide the traceability, visibility, shared control, and the ability to react quickly – for these complex software development, test, and deployment processes.

We are rapidly moving to a brave new world of interconnected smart homes, cars, offices and factories known as the Internet of Things (IoT). Sensors and monitoring devices will touch every part of our lives. Let's take a closer look at the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things is a worldwide network of objects and devices connected to the Internet. They are electronics, sensors, software and more. These objects connect to the Internet and can be controlled remotely via apps and programs. Because they can be accessed via the Internet, these devices create a tremendous opportunity to integrate computers and the physical world. They will improve our lives by making things more efficient and accurate, providing economic benefits derived from more effective use of resources.

Up for Thee But Not for Me. The Struggle Is Real By @LMacVittie | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps

It is an unwritten rule that web/app servers should never, ever pushed to 100% capacity. Never. Ignoring this unwritten rule will invariably result in the phenomenon we’ll call “up for thee but not for me”, which is simply the situation in which a web site or app responds to the guy in the next cube – but not for you.

Tune into the Cloud: Simple Plan | @CloudExpo #IoT #BigData

The phrase that whoever “Fails to Plan” actually “Plans to Fail” also applies to cloud computing. Many organisations are therefor putting together a cloud strategy. The question is whether the establishment of a company-wide cloud strategy is the right way. After all, the use of Cloud is not an end but a means, or as the IT manager of a large Dutch retail organisation recently succinctly put it: “For us cloud is not a strategy, but a useful set of tactics”.
