Speed. Quality. Innovation. That is what you are tasked with day in and day out... delivering superior user experiences that excite and engage your customers. But every benefit of beating your competition to market disappears if the app fails to perform in production. With development now happening in sprints, testing can no longer be sequential. Quality must be a focal point at every stage in the SDLC. In his session at DevOps Summit, Scott Edwards, Director of Product Marketing at CA Technologies, will discuss how to “shift quality left” to make QA more than just a single step in the SDLC. By automating the creation of test and virtual services, and enabling access to realistic test data and scenarios early in the SDLC, you can drive a pervasive, continuous quality process integrated earlier throughout the development process.
For IoT to grow as quickly as analyst firms’ project, a lot is going to fall on developers to quickly bring applications to market. But the lack of a standard development platform threatens to slow growth and make application development more time consuming and costly, much like we’ve seen in the mobile space. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Mike Weiner is Product Manager of the Omega DevCloud with KORE Telematics Inc., will discuss the evolving requirements for developers as IoT matures and conduct a live demonstration of how quickly application development can happen when the need to comply with multiple different standards is removed and developers can create any app for any device using any data format.

Internet of @ThingsExpo, taking place Nov 3-5, 2015, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, is co-located with 17th Cloud Expo and will feature technical sessions from a rock star conference faculty and the leading industry players in the world. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the most profound change in personal and enterprise IT since the creation of the Worldwide Web more than 20 years ago. All major researchers estimate there will be tens of billions devices - computers, smartphones, tablets, and sensors - connected to the Internet by 2020. This number will continue to grow at a rapid pace for the next several decades.
Elasticsearch is booming. Together with Logstash, a tool for collecting and processing logs, and Kibana, a tool for searching and visualizing data in Elasticsearch (aka the “ELK” stack), adoption of Elasticsearch continues to grow by leaps and bounds. When it comes to actually using Elasticsearch, there are tons of metrics generated. Instead of taking on the formidable task of tackling all-things-metrics in one blog post, we’re going to serve up something that we at Sematext have found to be extremely useful in our work as Elasticsearch consultants, production support providers, and monitoring solution builders: the top 10 Elasticsearch metrics to watch. This should be especially helpful to those readers new to Elasticsearch, and also to experienced users who want a quick start into performance monitoring of Elasticsearch.
For years, we’ve relied too heavily on individual network functions or simplistic cloud controllers. However, they are no longer enough for today’s modern cloud data center. Businesses need a comprehensive platform architecture in order to deliver a complete networking suite for IoT environment based on OpenStack. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Dhiraj Sehgal from PLUMgrid will discuss what a holistic networking solution should really entail, and how to build a complete platform that is scalable, secure, agile and automated.
Docker offers a new, lightweight approach to application portability. Applications are shipped using a common container format and managed with a high-level API. Their processes run within isolated namespaces that abstract the operating environment independently of the distribution, versions, network setup, and other details of this environment. This "containerization" has often been nicknamed "the new virtualization." But containers are more than lightweight virtual machines. Beyond their smaller footprint, shorter boot times, and higher consolidation factors, they also bring a lot of new features and use cases that were not possible with classical virtual machines.

How can you compare one technology or tool to its competitors? Usually, there is no objective comparison available. So how do you know which is better? Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA? Java EE or Spring? C# or Java? All you can usually find is a holy war and biased comparisons on vendor sites. But luckily, sometimes, you can find a fair comparison. How does this come to be? By having it co-authored by the stakeholders. The binary repository comparison matrix is one of those rare resources. It is edited by JFrog, Sonatype and Archiva committers to provide you with an objective picture; every vendor adds new features and watches the others to make sure everyone plays fair.
I’m struck by what’s happening in the healthcare industry – between healthcare providers such as hospitals, and healthcare payers such as insurance companies – and how that industry is ripe for a metamorphosis into something much more efficient, effective and customer (patient)-centric. And within this metamorphosis, new power brokers are likely to emerge; those players who are able to leverage new sources of patient, physician, clinical, medication and care data to optimize key operational processes and dramatically reduce inefficient and unnecessary processes and procedures.
With several hundred implementations of IoT-enabled solutions in the past 12 months alone, this session will focus on experience over the art of the possible. Many can only imagine the most advanced telematics platform ever deployed, supporting millions of customers, producing tens of thousands events or GBs per trip, and hundreds of TBs per month. With the ability to support a billion sensor events per second, over 30PB of warm data for analytics, and hundreds of PBs for an data analytics archive, in his session at @ThingsExpo, Jim Kaskade, Vice President and General Manager, Big Data & Analytics at CSC, will overview how user-based auto insurance can be implemented at scale. He will demonstrate a production deployment based on a cloud-hosted, cyber-secured, real-time to batch analytics telematics platform that enables what we commonly refer to as the “Smart Car.” He will also touch on how Internet of Things is being truly implemented across several verticals including Banking, this Insurance example, Health, Manufacturing, Transportation, Utilities, and Retail.
Thanks to Docker, it becomes very easy to leverage containers to build, ship, and run any Linux application on any kind of infrastructure. Docker is particularly helpful for microservice architectures because their successful implementation relies on a fast, efficient deployment mechanism – which is precisely one of the features of Docker. Microservice architectures are therefore becoming more popular, and are increasingly seen as an interesting option even for smaller projects, instead of being reserved to the largest, most complex application stacks.
According to the study, respondents have experienced anywhere from a 14 to 21 percent improvement in business in the form of increased numbers of customers, faster time-to-market and improved quality and performance of applications. US respondents have seen more improvements than the global average, for instance about 27 percent increased collaboration between departments, a 26 percent reduction in time spent fixing and maintaining applications and a 24-25 percent increase in the number of customers as well as software and services that would otherwise not be possible.
DevOps has quickly become the buzzword du jour for the software industry and promotes something that many developers and IT Administrators don’t enjoy: collaboration. According to Wikipedia, “DevOps acknowledges the interdependence of software development, quality assurance, and IT operations“. By having all three arms of a technology department collaborating, software products and services can be produced with a high quality bar and operational efficiencies. In this article, we’ll review how IT operations can engage more with a customer’s experience and assist software development in isolating problems in a production environment with no code changes needed from the development engineers. We’ll use the AppDynamics Application Intelligence Platform to help illustrate how these synergies can drive a better product for customers
Every day we read jaw-dropping stats on the explosion of data. We allocate significant resources to harness and better understand it. We build businesses around it. But we’ve only just begun. It's not just apps that are decomposing, it's the network, too. The network is bifurcating. On the one side is rock solid reliability founded on the premise of permanence and infrequent change. On the other is flexibility borne of transience, immutability and rapid change. There are, by virtue of this change in application architecture from the monolithic to the microservice model, changes necessary in the network. Specifically to the means by which the network delivers the application services upon which apps rely to be themselves delivered in a way that meets the performance, security and availability expectations of business and consumers alike.
SmartBear Software has released a TestComplete plugin for Jenkins, a popular open source continuous integration tool. The new TestComplete Jenkins plugin helps simplify and streamline continuous delivery process by making it easy for anyone to automatically execute and report on TestComplete tests through Jenkins. Customers deploying the new TestComplete Jenkins plugin are able to balance speed of application delivery with quality. While implementing continuous delivery, organizations often simplify the release process by prioritizing product backlog and releasing requirements in small increments frequently. This helps minimize cycle time between teams and accelerate application delivery schedules. Testing, many times, however can act as a bottleneck to such faster application delivery processes.

As the Internet continues its rapid expansion, is it high time to move the world's data centers to Iceland? A place that can offer 100% renewable energy at a fixed, long-term power cost. At first glance it may seem an unusual proposition and difficult to imagine a Silicon Valley icon like Google moving/consolidating all their data centers to such a remote area. But it's a move that may make the most strategic sense. In many ways, Iceland makes for an ideal location for the data centers of the future. The first compelling argument is Iceland's year-round cooler climate, which easily accommodates and dissipates the extreme heat generated by thousands of running servers. No need to run air-cooling systems at full blast during summer.
