Why Database as a Service Is Like a Stack of Pancakes | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

Life may be like a box of chocolates , but Database as a Service is like a stack of pancakes. Let us count the ways… Variety is the spice of life - The last time I looked at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) menu, there were 16 different kinds of pancakes to choose from. OpenStack Trove doesn't yet support quite that many databases, but between NoSQL and traditional relational databases, it already supports nine different database engines with more coming all the time.

Easy Internet of Things Integration By @AgilePoint | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

Today’s enterprise is being driven by disruptive competitive and human capital requirements to provide enterprise application access through not only desktops, but also mobile devices. To retrofit existing programs across all these devices using traditional programming methods is very costly and time consuming – often prohibitively so. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jesse Shiah, CEO, President, and Co-Founder of AgilePoint Inc., discussed how you can create applications that run on all mobile devices as well as laptops and desktops using a visual drag-and-drop application – and eForms-building techniques in 10% of the time it would take for traditional programming. Connect to all your existing in-house systems and databases as well as third-party applications like Salesforce, SAP, Office 365, etc., through easy-to-create and maintain process-centric enterprise workflow applications your team can create in days.

DevOps Can Learn from Enterprise By @Plutora | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Many of the well-known examples of DevOps success we read in blogs on the Internet paint an idyllic picture of DevOps productivity. A team was facing a stodgy, slow-moving operations department, teams weren’t delivering software on time. Those teams moved to DevOps, became proactive about infrastructure and deployment automation, and an overnight transition to productivity ensues. People are promoted, projects are successful, and developers and system administrators dance hand-in-hand in a finale that has everyone applauding. DevOps is magic, and sometimes this is the reality for smaller projects and startups.

From Gaming to Car Rentals By @AriaSystemsInc | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

As a life-long gamer, I spend an inordinate amount of my time thinking about the vast sums of wealth the gaming industry has squeezed out of me over the last 25+ years. There are two main ways that game companies squeeze some extra profit from their customers in addition to selling games at retail. The first model, the “freemium” model, is well understood by anyone who likes cell phone games. Candy Crush has made millions, $2 at a time.

Template Caching in Angular By @Logentries | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Log data provides the most granular view into what is happening across your systems, applications, and end users. Logs can show you where the issues are in real-time, and provide a historical trending view over time. Logs give you the whole picture. When we build a JS application, we usually start thinking about optimizing the http request, compression and, sometimes, "uglifying" the JS files.

Anatomy of an 'Internet of Things' Venture @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

An anatomy of startup ventures for the Internet of Things market. Like GE describes in their white paper Pushing the Boundaries of Mind and Machine, this is basically a process of innovating through more intelligent machines to reinvent workflow models. For a useful overview as to what constitutes an ‘IoT startup’, check out one example for some key characteristics: Hutgrip. Hutgrip is a SaaS solution that replaces VPNs with the Cloud and real time analytics, with the headline points being: Clear description of the business benefit the new technology will bring – Smarter automation of big cost processes will drive huge savings for many firms. Very nicely presented too.

What It Feels Like to Take Control of Your Files | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

Over the last several weeks, we’ve examined the risks of using the public cloud in the enterprise workplace. From unauthorized file access to regulatory noncompliance, the potential scenarios vary from dire to more dire – and it’s up to decision makers to take control of their organization’s enterprise file sync-and-share (EFSS) procedures. But what does it feel like to have that control? If you’re currently trying to figure out how and where users are keeping their files, regaining control may sound like a faraway fantasy.

I Received 10 Million Euro Offer Through LinkedIn By @YFain | CloudExpo [#Cloud]

Then I’ve received an LinkedIn email from this woman stating that she had a business proposition for me, and if I was interested, she was ready to explain. She also provided her email that ended in outlook.com. I checked her LinkedIn profile again. Looked legit. She even had a Twitter account with recent tweets in two languages. I responded that I was ready to hear about this business proposition. Next day I’ve received a long email from her explaining how she had a private client named Lewis Fain who initially deposited €19M in their bank and she helped him to grow the wealth to €22M, but unfortunately he died in a car crash. She’s ready to wire transfer me the money, in one condition: we’d split the amount in half so she could improve the wellbeing of her family. She also asked me not to ruin her career in the bank if I was not interested.

Am I Still a Java Developer? By @YFain | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

This morning I got the following email from a Java developer: “It seems you are doing less Java and more web development every year.” This got me thinking, and I decided to write this blog. Am I still a Java developer after 17 years of using this language? I certainly am. But in today’s world using just one programming language is almost impossible unless you’re willing to limit yourself to the server-side development. I’m not saying this is bad – it’s a huge field for never ending self-education and research. Even from the career perspective becoming an expert in a specific Java field can put bread and butter on your table for years to come. For example, Java experts specializing in performance tuning can charge several times more than a typical Java developer. Some people become experts in security or concurrent programming, which allows them to eat an omelet with truffles for breakfast daily.

The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to evolve the way the world does business; however, understanding how to apply it to your company can be a mystery. Most people struggle with understanding the potential business uses or tend to get caught up in the technology, resulting in solutions that fail to meet even minimum business goals. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jesse Shiah, CEO / President / Co-Founder of AgilePoint Inc., showed what is needed to leverage the IoT to transform your business. He discussed opportunities and challenges ahead for the IoT from a market and technical point of view, including the various connectivity technologies, microcontrollers and processors available with a strong focus on applications. Cloud and Internet of Things By @HP | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are increasing at an unprecedented rate. The threat landscape of today is drastically different than just a few years ago. Attacks are much more organized and sophisticated. They are harder to detect and even harder to anticipate. In the foreseeable future it's going to get a whole lot harder. Everything you know today will change. Keeping up with this changing landscape is already a daunting task. Your organization needs to use the latest tools, methods and expertise to guard against those threats. But will that be enough? In the foreseeable future attacks will originate from entirely new attack platforms. The tools and methods you use today will not protect you from the threats you will face tomorrow. Your security experts will be no match for this new threat. Where will these attacks come from? It isn't where you think.

Forget About PaaS By @ActiveState | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

Over the last couple of years I have talked to numerous enterprise customers, analysts, industry pundits, and others interested in cloud technologies, and one thing is abundantly clear – Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) seems to mean different things to different people. But the term PaaS is irrelevant – it's just noise. What is relevant, and what is important, is what PaaS does: enable applications. That's what enterprises care about. They want to accelerate application development to get products to market faster and into users' hands sooner.

Agile Self Governance By @DavidSprott | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

I guess most readers of this blog know that Ireland went through a massive bust in 2008/9. The primary cause was a massive building bubble. And because the economy was dependent upon building related taxes, the crash was brutal. One of the side effects of the bubble was that building standards suffered. In one extreme case a block of apartments was constructed with no fire safety protection! There were many, many more prosaic examples. In my own case I had building works completed that had to be completely reworked within a couple of years! The reasons for the low quality were complete lack of governance. In the boom times many people set-up without adequate skills and many developers over-committed to deliver more work than they could manage competently. In Ireland, unlike say the UK, there was no independent building inspection regime. Architects merely had to give approval for work to proceed at the major stages. There was no independent oversight.

The Art of DevOps By @Dynatrace | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

Welcome to my four-part series on what I’m going to call the Art of DevOps. We will embark on a mission to reveal the extremely valuable intelligence that’s been collected about a unique strategy to continuously deliver assets to the operational battleground safely, securely and quickly. This strategy drives optimal monitoring of the frontlines and enhanced communications with the troops supporting the initial development. I do make the assumption that most of you are battle-worthy veterans in one or more of the environments that I’ll review. Beyond this introduction blog, I’ll brief you on some of the best DevOps tactics to aid in your deployments while providing maximum situational awareness within each environment. I’ll also do my best to expand upon the best lines of defense with minimal disruption. Unfortunately, in my experience, many of you will be deficient either over lack of preparation such as test automation, damaged assets or organizational challenges in one or more areas of deployment. The goal of this series is to help you recognize where your deficits are, how to address certain scenarios and which tactics you need to use to lead a successful DevOps operation.

How to Support Agility By @Plutora | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

The challenge facing today’s project management professionals is supporting a more agile approach to software releases while managing orderly governance and production controls that are necessary. Project managers have become air traffic controllers landing more projects more frequently on more runways, and as the skies become more crowded it’s important to understand both the trends and some strategies for managing the increasingly agile enterprise.
