CIOs are increasingly concerned about cloud security. And they should be: with the recent outbreak of visible breaches at high-profile organizations like Target, Anthem, and others, and the subsequent damage they cause, corporations are scrambling to make sure their cloud applications, whether on private, public, or hybrid clouds, are safe. But cloud security is complex. With ephemeral applications and services springing up around multiple data centers, with dozens or hundreds of independent microservices each with their own access mechanisms, with the widespread adoption of virtualization and the recent rampant frenzy over containerization, keeping on top of cloud-specific security vulnerabilities is a huge effort in itself.
Today, we are proud to announce the first code drop of Apache Ignite, Apache Ignite v1.0 RC (Release Candidate), available for download on the Apache Ignite homepage. This is an exciting time for the project and the committers have been working hard since November to reach this milestone. We commend them all. Apache Ignite v1.0 RC not only carries forward the capabilities formerly available as the open source edition of the GridGain In-Memory Data Fabric, but now also boasts new ease-of-use and automation features, simplifying the deployment of an in-memory data fabric and allowing organizations to focus more on their core business and analysis.
Business users can conjure new applications, send messages and share information around the world at the speed of light from their mobile devices. But just because they can, doesn’t mean they should – all this sharing and collaboration can have consequences on businesses’ security. Sending this content without consulting the IT department can bring ruin to the best laid plans of an entire organization. There, in the dark regions of Shadow IT lurk the evils of illegality, non-compliance, data loss, information leaks and content theft. For example, a doctor puts patient data on her tablet so she doesn’t have to carry a pile of charts on her rounds. The tablet is stolen and HIPPA regulators are not happy. A marketing guy puts a product roadmap presentation into a file sharing service that gets hacked and future product details are leaked to the press. A salesperson loses his computer bag at an industry conference and price lists and customer contact information are now in the hands of the competition.
When it comes to data security, identifying what you consider your crown jewels is the first step in the data security recovery program. Legacy products can be expensive and negatively impact performance. Organizations need to realize that the complexity and fear of access control is a thing of the past. Before we get started on recovery, here are a few things you need to ask yourself:
When implementing a cloud-based file-sharing solution, the user experience will play a major role in its adoption and overall success. It will be important for you to gather input from your employees and customers and regularly collect feedback to identify ways to better meet their needs. Here are some questions to ask before implementing a cloud-based file-sharing solution.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is causing data centers to become radically decentralized and atomized within a new paradigm known as “fog computing.” To support IoT applications, such as connected cars and smart grids, data centers' core functions will be decentralized out to the network's edges and endpoints (aka “fogs”). As this trend takes hold, Big Data analytics platforms will focus on high-volume log analysis (aka “logs”) and rely heavily on cognitive-computing algorithms (aka “cogs”) to make sense of it all.

Everyone has stayed in a standard hotel room – they all have similar qualities, with similar prices and amenities. You can expect a good night’s sleep, HBO movies on the TV, and a free muffin in the morning. While I may be taking a few liberties with this analogy, I’d argue – the cloud is equivalent to the standard hotel room. There’s nothing wrong with plain, run-of-the-mill accommodations, but you’d be amazed to find Tim Cook shacking up at the Holiday Inn, and he definitely wouldn’t sign a contract requiring him to stay every time he lands in New York.
Peanut butter and jelly. Love and marriage. Horse and carriage. Coffee and cup. Batman and Robin. Some things just belong together. It’s even a little bit magical the way that certain things can be combined to form a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts. That’s certainly true of the classic combo examples above. And it’s also true of the combo of Application Performance Monitoring and Application Analytics. It’s a shame, then, that many of our customers deny themselves the power of combining APM with Application Analytics.
Our guest on the podcast this week is Alan Sharp-Paul, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of ScriptRock. We discuss a blog post by Alan entitled “You’re Doing DevOps Wrong. Automation in the Enterprise” that introduces the common misconception that automation is the first step that needs to be taken in your DevOps initiative. Listen in to learn what you should be doing before you automate.
CommVault has launched Simpana for Endpoint Data Protection, a new solution set designed to help protect and enable the mobile workforce by efficiently backing-up laptops, desktops and mobile devices and providing secure access and self-service capabilities. With today's mobile workforce increasing their reliance on information saved on local endpoints and outside IT's traditional domain, the need to protect sensitive data residing on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices has become more critical than ever before. As global data breaches reach an average cost of $3.5 million in US dollars according to a study by the Ponemon Institute due to lost or unrecoverable data on employee devices, including desktops, laptops, and mobile devices, organizations are beginning to embrace centrally managed platforms that can be used to simultaneously address data protection, collaboration, regulatory, and eDiscovery requirements in a secure manner.
This BriefingsDirect discussion explores the role and impact of business networks, the often virtual assemblages of interrelated business services, processes, and data that are transforming how companies and consumers conduct commerce. New business networks are unlocking the ability for companies to extend processes and insights broadly and affordably to customers, suppliers, and other partners. As a result, data-savvy B2B participants in these networks are better able to engage with their communities in new and innovative ways.
Think of your new and existing products and services. Are there other ways you can package and price your offerings? Whether your goal is to grow your customer base, revenue, market share, or share of wallet, recurring revenue models can provide a multitude of options for creating new revenue streams from new or existing products. Much of the industry is still talking about the success of basic subscriptions (Amazon Prime, Netflix, Box, etc.), but many forward-thinking companies know the real value is in the broader range of monetization options. Nearly any product in your catalog can be repackaged into a recurring revenue service with a vast array of pricing options. Whatever your goals may be you have options… and lots of them.
2015 is being billed by many in the industry as the “Year of the Hybrid Cloud.” In fact, more than 65 percent of enterprise IT organizations will commit to hybrid cloud technologies before 2016, vastly driving the rate and pace of change in IT organizations, according to IDC FutureScape for Cloud. The reason hybrid cloud is so attractive is that organizations believe they can achieve greater levels of scalability and cost-effectiveness by using a combination of in-house IT resources and public cloud environments tailored to their unique needs.

On the surface, many network management products seem the same. But any network management system claiming to be a solution will, at a minimum, maintain an inventory of the network devices, understand their interconnectivity, monitor (and alert on) each device’s response (availability), monitor each device’s performance to some degree, and may note configuration changes. But beauty is only skin deep. How, how well, and how deeply an NMS does these makes all the difference.
I started programming with Swift the first day it was available. Back then all we had available was Apple's The Swift Programming Language, and Using Swift with Cocoa and Objective-C eBooks. I got in a few weeks of heads down work before the plug was pulled on our project. When the project was shut down I was handed a project that required 100% of my attention so I was forced to shut down Xcode for a few months. That was a blessing and a curse. Curse because I don't remember anything I was doing, and a blessing because now there are several books available for getting started with Swift.

Regardless of where you begin, it’s important to internalize the analogy that a DevOps transformation is a journey. “Adopting DevOps is not a ‘one-and-done’ project. It is adopting a mindset, a culture,” says Sanjeev, “It is a commitment to a journey of continuous improvement by adopting a set of capabilities and practices that are based on Lean principles.” That journey consists of a number of steps, or smaller transformations that each will serve to improve the flow of value through your develop/test/deploy process, and bring benefits to the business at each successive stage.
The Evident.io Security Platform (ESP) is a cloud-first security and threat analysis service for AWS. ESP provides security best practice checks that give you visibility into your part of the AWS Shared Security Responsibility model. This visibility can scale from one to thousands of AWS accounts and dives deep into many AWS services. At Evident.io, one of our core beliefs is that security tools should be simple to use and make the job of security teams easier, not harder. One of the ways we do that is by ensuring that Evident security alerts are always actionable. So, it came as no surprise that our customers started asking us to integrate the Evident.io security platform with PagerDuty, an Operations Performance Platform that makes identifying and resolving incidents easier and faster.
Those watching federal cloud security in the defense space were pleased to learn the Defense DOD Cloud Computing Security Requirements Guide (v1) (SRG) last month. This 152-page document outlines the security requirements that Department of Defense (DOD) mission owners must adhere to when procuring cloud-based services. While the document is very thorough and is required reading if you currently, or intend to provide, cloud-based services to the DOD, I wanted to cover some of the things that stood out to me.
