Cloud services are the newest tool in the arsenal of IT products in the market today. These cloud services integrate process and tools. In order to use these products effectively, organizations must have a good understanding of themselves and their business requirements. In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Brian Lewis, Principal Architect at Verizon Cloud, outlined key areas of organizational focus, and how to formalize an actionable plan when migrating applications and internal services to the cloud.
2014 was a year of cloud security and compliance accomplishments and 2015 will certainly bring new challenges and new successes. In 2014, we worked closely with many customers who needed to adhere to HIPAA and PCI DSS compliance requirements. We made sure all bases were covered, data was protected, and compliance was achieved. Though PCI DSS 3.0 was officially released on November 7, 2013 and became effective on January 1, 2014, its compliance deadline took effect a year later, on January 1, 2015. This infographic explains what you need to know about PCI DSS 3.0.

Databases take a long time to build, populate and manage, but deploying in the cloud holds great promise for changing all of that. Time is probably the most valuable commodity in business. "Time is money" is a trite way of saying that those who move the quickest are usually the ones who get the loot. But current database technology is anything but timely. Databases take a long time to build, populate and manage, and more often than not produce valuable results only after hours of number crunching. And with Big Data, social networking, the Internet of Things and other data-intensive workloads on the near horizon, database functionality is likely to become slower still.
"At Harbinger we do products as well as services. Our services are with helping companies move their products to the cloud operating systems. Some of the challenges we have seen as far as cloud adoption goes are in the cloud security space," noted Shrikant Pattathil, Executive Vice President at Harbinger Systems, in this SYS-CON.tv interview at Cloud Expo, held Nov 4–6, 2014, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA.

Technology was dominated by several prevalent trends in 2014 – from the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data to the cloud and cyber security, it seems like there was barely a day without one of these trends creeping up in the news. Now we have entered 2015, these trends are still at the forefront of discussion, with many exciting opportunities, innovations and iterations being predicted for this year.

Almost everyone sees the potential of Internet of Things but how can businesses truly unlock that potential. The key will be in the ability to discover business insight in the midst of an ocean of Big Data generated from billions of embedded devices via Systems of Discover. Businesses will also need to ensure that they can sustain that insight by leveraging the cloud for global reach, scale and elasticity.
Developing, say, the next generation computer chip is enormously expensive, both in terms of money as well as the time that researches must devote. If there were any question as to whether people would buy that faster chip, then the will to invest would drop, and with it the exponential growth pattern. In other words, the loop above is tuned for maximum feedback. Using the metaphor of tuning here is no accident – you can think of the pattern above as an example of resonance.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Andrei Yurkevich, CTO at Altoros, provided an overview of all the benefits and opportunities, as well as drawbacks of deploying Cloud Foundry PaaS with Juju and compared it to BOSH. Discover the features that overlap, and understand what Juju Charm is, what it is not, where you use one or the other or where you use both BOSH and Juju Charms together. At the start of a new year we have the opportunity to look ahead and think about what trends will likely shape the coming months. 2015 is poised to be transformative for government agencies and enterprises, as an increasing number of organizations look to modernize their computing environments, expand their focus on secure and compliant hosting, and meet the growing demands of an increasingly mobile workforce. What trends will we see emerge this year? Here are the top seven predictions we see for 2015.
My first answer was to create a cli script that performs the computation and update the configuration items according to the expected definition but the Ops team needs to switch to another tools. My next answer was to define a control task that can called from the UI but typically the ‘repositoryService‘ is not injected in the script’s context: impossible to update the configuration item’s values. So I found out the following solution: define a rule that perform the computation using a pre-plan processor and a python script:
Cloudian, Inc., on Wednesday announced availability of Cloudian HyperStore 5.1 software. HyperStore 5.1 is an enhanced Amazon S3-compliant, plug-and-play hybrid cloud software solution that now features full Apache Hadoop integration. With the proliferation of NoSQL databases in recent years, it can be easy to forget that not long ago, we were all discussing how to optimize traditional relational databases to perform tasks for non-relational workloads. Before we were talking about cost-effective horizontal scaling, flexible data types, and extremely fast data accesses, the world was all about the relational database management systems (RDBMS).
A couple years ago I attended several "fast pitch" competitions and events for entrepreneurs in Southern California, all designed to give startups a chance to "pitch" their ideas in about 60 seconds to a panel of representatives from the local investment community. Similar to television's "Shark Tank," most of the ideas pitches were harshly critiqued, with the real intent of assisting participating entrepreneurs in developing a better story for approaching investors and markets.

With so much great content on the web and so many people writing about DevOps, I am sure you have heard of either some of these blogs or the brilliant minds running them. This very short list includes some of the most popular and interesting DevOps blogs we could find. Whether you are just starting out in the industry or a 10 year veteran, you need to start reading these immediately.
Perhaps not quite as clear-cut as a logical AND in the programmatic sense, but the age of the CEO as we once knew it could be over. There’s a simple reason for this, CIOs (and yes of course we do mean Chief Information Officers) are starting to run their operations as business entities in their own right. In no way detracting from the popular assertion that IT has to “progress from simply being a function in the business to now become a business enabling function in and of itself” (as the expression goes)… there’s an even deeper truth to realize.
ScriptRock makes GuardRail, a DevOps-ready platform for configuration monitoring. Realizing we were spending way too much time digging up, cataloguing, and tracking machine configurations, we began writing our own scripts and tools to handle what is normally an enormous chore. Then we took the concept a step further, giving it a beautiful interface and making it simple enough for our bosses to understand. We named it GuardRail after its function - to allow businesses to move fast and stay safe. GuardRail scans and tracks much more than just servers in a datacenter. It works with network hardware, Cloud service providers, CloudFlare, Android devices, infrastructure, and more.
Email is a mission critical application that is relied on to power business communication and collaboration capabilities on a day-to-day basis. It is a vital component of modern business and being able to send and receive email is of paramount importance. If you were to make a list of applications to track and control configuration changes of, email would be at the top of that list.
I have the unique opportunity to work alongside some very smart people where we conduct research, collect data, analyze and write about it. Our focus tends to be on technology and its impact on people, businesses, societies and economies. As a result of many discussions with technology and industry leaders, it is my firm belief that it has never been more important to engage in a lifelong pursuit of education and skills development. Education is not something you complete; rather it is a lifelong activity - a lifestyle. Technology innovations, fast-changing business models, transforming economies and evolving markets mean it is highly likely you will have multiple careers, with different companies and in different industries during your working life. In order to enter and remain in the economic winners' column you will need to constantly prepare and train to compete for new career and emerging business opportunities.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is causing data centers to become radically decentralized and atomized within a new paradigm known as “fog computing.” To support IoT applications, such as connected cars and smart grids, data centers' core functions will be decentralized out to the network's edges and endpoints (aka “fogs”). As this trend takes hold, Big Data analytics platforms will focus on high-volume log analysis (aka “logs”) and rely heavily on cognitive-computing algorithms (aka “cogs”) to make sense of it all.
