Creating the New Big Data Developer By @ABridgwater | @CloudExpo [#BigData]

HP hasn’t exactly coined the term Big Data developer. Except, perhaps, it maybe kind of has if you look at the recent tools being rolled out from the firm’s HP Software division. All working towards what HP loves to call “business transformation” – the company is now also using the term “new style of IT,” by which it of course means cloud-centric (always hybrid) technology architectures aligned to take advantage of Big Data analytics (even in SMBs) and other more cutting-edge elements such as enterprise social activity and collaboration technology.

The State of Real-time Analytics in Financial Services By @GridGain [#BigData]

While only 22% of respondents reported "accessing the necessary data streams" as the biggest obstacle to real-time decision-making, processing speed (40%) and "integrating diverse data streams to form a single picture" (38%) were reported as more significant challenges. "The data is there, and there's little problem accessing it," said Herrmann. "However, the decision-making pipeline is slowed by reliance on traditional disk-based processing as well as the variety of data structures and data sources organizations are trying to make sense of in their decision-making process. This problem is only likely to worsen until the traditional approach of processing different data within their own silos is addressed, as organizations will only be taking in more and more data."

In-Memory Technology & Wave of Innovation By @GridGain | @CloudExpo [#BigData]

Gordon E. Moore's famously predicted tech explosion was prophetic, but it may have hit a snag. While the number of transistors on integrated circuits has doubled approximately every two years since his 1965 paper, the ability to process and transact on data hasn't. We're now ingesting data faster than we can make sense of it, leaving computing at an impasse. Without a new approach, the innovation promised by the combination of big data and internet scale may be like the flying cars we thought we'd see by 2014. Fortunately, this is is not the case, as in-memory computing offers a way to bridge this impasse.ning the doors to mass adoptiong of in-memory computing through open source.

DevOps Summit Was a Terrific Event! By @QubellInc | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

DevOps Summit at Cloud Expo 2014 Silicon Valley was a terrific event for us. The Qubell booth was crowded on all three days. We ran demos every 30 minutes with folks lining up to get a seat and usually standing around. It was great to meet and talk to over 500 people! My keynote was well received and so was Stan's joint presentation with RingCentral on Devops for BigData. I also participated in two Power Panels – ‘Women in Technology’ and ‘Why DevOps Is Even More Important than You Think,’ both featuring brilliant colleagues and moderators and it was a blast to be a part of.

Hadoop – 100x Faster By @GridGain | @CloudExpo [#BigData]

It is almost two years ago now when Dmitriy and I stood in front of the white board at the old GridGain office thinking: “How can we deliver all the real-time performance of GridGain’s in-memory technology to Hadoop customers without asking them rip and replace their systems and without asking them to move their datasets off Hadoop?”. If you know anything about Hadoop architecture - the task seemed daunting to us and it proved to be one of the most challenging engineering feat that we have accomplished so far. After almost 24 months of development, tens of thousands of lines of Java, Scala and C++ code, multiple design iterations, several releases and dozens of benchmarks later we have the product that can deliver real-time performance to Hadoop with only minimal integration and no ETL required. Backed-up by customer deployments that prove our performance claims and validate our architecture

‘Signaling Layer for WebRTC’ By @MatrixDotOrg | @ThingsExpo [#WebRTC #IoT]

WebRTC defines no default signaling protocol, causing fragmentation between WebRTC silos. SIP and XMPP provide possibilities, but come with considerable complexity and are not designed for use in a web environment. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Matthew Hodgson, technical co-founder of the Matrix.org, discussed how Matrix is a new non-profit Open Source Project that defines both a new HTTP-based standard for VoIP & IM signaling and provides reference implementations.

Internet of Things Wearables: New Buzz or New Technology? | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

About 15 years ago I fainted. It was the only time in my life that I fainted. The reasons were probably, blood donation a day before, Work from 7:00 until 19:00 and participation in the the thirty-third day of the Omer period ceremonies of my children (I stood for a long time beside the traditional fire). No problem found during The Medical Check up, I performed. The Medical Check up included wearing an Holter Monitor recording my heart activity for 24 hours. The Holter was a Wearable computing device, however nobody used the word Wearable. If we exclude the enhanced computing power of current Wearables in comparison to the old Holter monitor, we can find two factor differentiating current Wearables from the Holter Monitor.

Secure the 'Internet of Things' By @JamesKobielus | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

The security devil is always in the details of the attack: the ones you've endured, the ones you prepare yourself to fend off, and the ones that, you fear, will catch you completely unaware and defenseless. The Internet of Things (IoT) is nothing if not an endless proliferation of details. It's the vision of a world in which continuous Internet connectivity and addressability is embedded into a growing range of human artifacts, into the natural world, and even into our smartphones, appliances, and physical persons. In the IoT vision, every new "thing" - sensor, actuator, data source, data consumer, routing intermediary, etc., is a new security-relevant detail that stirs up a wide range of collateral security issues. In other words, every new networked IoT endpoint is a new potential attack vector or launching point that the baddies can exploit. Potentially, every time you plug in a new IoT-networked device that is infected with malware or simply open to unauthorized third-party exploitation, the vulnerabilities start. Someone somewhere might exploit the new access point to gain illicit access to sensitive secrets (business, consumer, government, etc.), to damage software and data, and to wage distributed denial of service attacks.

‘Enterprise DevOps’ By @JPMorgenthal | @DevOpsSummit [#DevOps]

The term culture has had a polarizing effect among DevOps supporters. Some propose that culture change is critical for success with DevOps, but are remiss to define culture. Some talk about a DevOps culture but then reference activities that could lead to culture change and there are those that talk about culture change as a set of behaviors that need to be adopted by those in IT. There is no question that businesses successful in adopting a DevOps mindset have seen departmental culture change, the question remains, is culture the leading edge of this change? I posit that in large enterprises, culture change is the result of effective process and organizational change fostered by good IT leaders and is not the front end of change.

Comparing OpenStack to CloudStack By @Appcore | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

This past week the Appcore team got the opportunity to attend one of the industry’s leading cloud events, Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, CA. We spent a lot of time interacting with attendees at the exhibit portion of the event. As a software company with a sole commitment to CloudStack, we heard a lot of questions around the debate between CloudStack and OpenStack. “Do you support OpenStack?” “Why do you only support CloudStack?” “Do you plan to integrate OpenStack into your multi-cloud solution?” We can all agree that OpenStack has done a great job branding their product. That isn’t hard to do with an annual operating budget of $4–5 mm and enterprises such as Red Hat, Dell, HP and Rackspace backing the project. As you can imagine, many enterprise CEOs believe OpenStack is the right direction.

Internet of Things Key Elements By @GreenwaveSys | @ThingsExpo [#IoT]

Connected devices and the Internet of Things are getting significant momentum in 2014. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Jim Hunter, Chief Scientist & Technology Evangelist at Greenwave Systems, examined three key elements that together will drive mass adoption of the IoT before the end of 2015. The first element is the recent advent of robust open source protocols (like AllJoyn and WebRTC) that facilitate M2M communication. The second is broad availability of flexible, cost-effective storage designed to handle the massive surge in back-end data in a world where timely analytics is essential to maintaining competitive advantage. Third is the emergence of application-specific software providers whose solutions can unlock IoT's full potential across all embedded devices.

IoT Is the New #BigData | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #DigitalTransformation

My favorite writer, Gil Press, sums it up with, “It’s Official: The Internet Of Things Takes Over Big Data As The Most Hyped Technology” where he talks about how Gartner released its latest Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, and how big data has moved down the “trough of disillusionment,” replaced by the Internet of Things at the top of the hype cycle. The term Internet of Things was coined by the British technologist Kevin Ashton in 1999, to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors.
