Apple Loses Mac OS Boss

Bertrand Serlet, the head of Mac OS X, is leaving the company to “focus less on products and more on science” according to Apple’s press release Wednesday. He will be replaced by his number two Craig Federighi, Apple’s VP of Mac software engineering, who will report as Serlet did to Steve Jobs. He has been managing the Mac OS software engineering group for the past two years and will be responsible for Mac OS X’ continued development. Serlet figures “the transition should be seamless.” Serlet, a veteran of the seminal Xerox PARC, has been with Jobs for 22 years at both NeXT, where Mac OS X first took shape, and then followed him to Apple. He succeeded Avie Tevanian as senior VP, software engineering in mid-2003 and was responsible for Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Windows Azure vs VMware vFabric

With Java EE being a major platform on enterprise, a good PaaS platform like vFabric is very exciting. This gives lot of choices for existing Java EE based applications to move to the Cloud. The comparison with Windows Azure is done only for the new Cloud applications or building new SaaS. Again we expect both these platforms to get upgraded to very many new features which will boost the SaaS market. At this time for new applications Windows Azure is ahead, but vFabric is a good choice for migrating existing Java EE applications to Cloud. We will definitely see integration aspects between them for the good of enterprises.

iPad 2s Reportedly Sold Out

There are no official numbers yet but multiple channel checks by Wall Street suggest that Apple sold somewhere between 400,000 and a million iPads over the weekend. That’s more than the 300,000 the first iPad did its first weekend out. They went mostly to people who didn’t own an iPad yet according to Piper Jeffrey analyst Gene Munster who surveyed 200-odd buyers. The dingus, priced at $499-$829 like the original, went on sale late Friday. Retail stores, including Apple’s own, are reportedly tapped out, with limited restocking. Apple’s web site started showing shipping delays of three-four weeks for the thing by Sunday, a timeline that was pushed out to four-five weeks Tuesday.

VMware Hopes to Entice Non-Coders to Build Java Cloud Computing Apps

VMware has acquired open source software company WaveMaker, which brings non-programmers into the Spring fold .WaveMaker's technology is built on the Spring programming model of another of its recent acquisitions, SpringSource. It provides a graphical tool that even non-developers could use to build Java applications by simply using a visual drag-and-drop method. The apps could be as simple as one featuring forms to build a page that lets end users enter a credit card to purchase a product or they could encompass more multi functional business reports that pull together financial and human resources data. Users can then deploy their creations directly to an internal cloud or to a variety of other platforms, including Amazon, Rackspace, OpSource and Eucalyptus. The software runs on Windows, Mac OS, Red Hat, Ubuntu and other operating systems and supports numerous databases including MySQL and Microsoft's SQL Server databases.

Immersive Video Available on iPhone 4 or iPad

XS2TheWorld, a mobile marketing and mobile application building specialist, has partnered with Transmission TX to launch 360° Video, a mobile app which puts the user at the centre of moving video, creating interactive, immersive worlds on the iPhone 4 and iPad. The app goes further than ever before in creating branded moving worlds that users can enter, control and explore. Working in a similar way to online 360° images, and using the accelerometer on the iPhone 4 and iPad, the mobile app places the viewer at the centre of moving footage so they can look around the environment and even interact with elements such as text, images or links. A brand could, for example, use this mobile marketing tool to create an immersive world from a skiing video, allowing the viewer to look up, down to the side and behind during a slalom run as if they were within the video itself. A bar or hotel could film a live tour through their property, giving the viewer the opportunity to look around at guests walking through the space, and stop and interact with signs or maps.

Deployment of the iOS Application

To get here, over that last 8 weeks, we have mentioned using a Mobile Enterprise Application Platform (MEAP) - the Sybase UnWired Platform (SUP) to create Mobile Business Objects (MBO's) that abstract our datasources and define what will be synchronized to our iOS Mobile Client. Now that we have built and tested our client, the next step is en-mass roll out of the application, to the Mobile Devices in our Enterprise. What we need to have is the control over Provision, Production and Decommission, within our Enterprise but always maintaining Device Management & Security... Enter Afaria, with an Afaria client available on the App Store. Remember the Afaria Client will need to connect to a back end Afaria Server.

Migrating JEE Applications to SpringSource tc Server

In this white paper, we will be discussing an important trend in IT development and deployment architectures: the evolution from JEE Application Servers to lighter weight Java containers. As evidenced by the growing popularity of Tomcat server – according to Evans Research, Tomcat is in use at 68 percent of all organizations (50 percent of which are built in Spring), making it the most widely deployed application server on the planet – many IT organizations have been re-thinking their commitment to commercial JEE application servers. This is due to challenging business environments that drive the need for more cost-effective application architectures and, just as important, the trend toward the use of more lightweight and efficient mechanisms for application development. This also becomes even more important as organizations begin to consider building applications for deployment into the cloud future. When IT organizations talk about “migrating” their applications, they generally are focusing on one or more of three distinct situations.

Migrating from Apache Tomcat to SpringSource tc Server

Tomcat is without question the most widely utilized Java Web Application Server. Initially a favorite of application developers because of its system friendly footprint, simplicity, and performance, Tomcat has now become an enterprise production environment in some IT organizations. In many more, it is relegated to usage in development environments only, because Tomcat lacks manageability, control, and monitoring capabilities, many of the applications originally developed on Tomcat have been deployed on commercial JEE Application Servers for production. This means that what were lightweight applications become burdened by the huge footprint of un-needed features and complexity. Additionally, while Tomcat does enable choice of support strategies, most IT organizations feel the need for expert commercial support. Given all the advantages Tomcat provides, it is important to find solutions to these deficiencies. This whitepaper will help IT managers understand the advantages of SpringSource tc Server. Based on 100 percent Tomcat, tc Server adds a number of critical functional capabilities as well as professional support led by Apache Tomcat community insiders.

Cloud Computing: Private Clouds - Buy vs Reuse vs Build

Large Enterprises need to evaluate between Build Vs Buy Vs Reuse in acquiring new business or technical capabilities. Like Software components, this Build Vs Buy Vs Reuse plays a key role in setting up Private Clouds Too and this article analyzes the options. The cloud infrastructure is owned or leased by a single organization, delivered over a private network and is operated solely for that organization, either by that organization (internal private cloud) or by an outsourcer (external private cloud). Private cloud is the implementation of cloud services on resources that are dedicated to your organization, whether they exist on-premises or off-premises. With a private cloud, you get many of the benefits of public cloud computing-including self-service, scalability, and elasticity-with the additional control and customization available from dedicated resources.

Fulfilling the Lean Software Promise

Commercial Java Platform Enterprise Edition (JEE) application servers have grown so large, complex, and overloaded as to slow application development, complicate deployment, and impose expensive licensing burdens for bundled features IT doesn’t need. Equally important, their heavy footprints make them ill-suited for today’s virtualized data centers. In response, Java developers by the millions have discarded bloated JEE containers in favor of lean software platforms. The choice of a large majority of Java developers today, these lightweight frameworks and application servers harmonize development with IT operations – delivering streamlined application development, huge savings of time and expense, simplicity of deployment, built-in performance management, and the small footprint required for virtualized and cloud environments.

Behind the Scenes of Serialization in Java

When building distributed applications one of the central performance-critical components is serialization. Most modern frameworks make it very easy to send data over the wire. In many cases you don’t see at all what is going on behind the scenes. Choosing the right serialization strategy however is central for achieving good performance and scalability. Serialization problems affect CPU, memory, network load and response times.

On the Eve of the Next iPad Gold Rush

Here we are on the eve before of what will definitely be the next iPad Gold Rush... the iPad2. I expect to see this in the media, in various ways. Already I have been spotting articles of some dedicated folks staking claim, to the first place in line, at some Apple Stores and I expect to see more join them tonight/tomorrow. What is sure, is that launch day will see critical mass, especially as this time pre-ordering has not been possible. I am wondering if this is Apple's wayof making sure that the amount of interest is translated to the lines and therefore can easily be measurable, reported on by the media and marketed by Apples PR machine? This is in comparison to the rather invisible shipments arriving at potential iPad2 owners front doors.

Red Hat Introduces JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform 5.1

We're beginning to see a real marketplace for open source-based integration and middleware, and in many ways the open source versions are advancing the value and variety of these services beyond where the commercial products can quickly tread. What's more, as cloud and SaaS services become more common, ways of integrating data and applications assets -- regardless or origins -- will need to keep pace. Standardization and inclusiveness of integration points and types may be much better served by a community approach, and open source licenses, than waiting for a commercial product upgrade, or costly custom integrations.

Tablets Crimp PC Growth: Gartner

No sooner had Steve Jobs’ announced the iPad 2 and talked about the “post-PC” phenomenon than Gartner axed its estimates for PC sales growth this year. It sheered its outlook from 15.9% to 10.5% on the assumption that laptops and netbooks won’t be as popular as it previously thought because of tablets. It’s now figuring on total PC sales of 383.8 million this year, with its optimism on 2012 also hedged, cut from 14.8% growth to 13.6% against the new lower 2011 estimate. Gartner figures that people, including the Chinese, will either buy tablets instead of PCs or extend the life of their existing laptops. It’s expecting home mobile PC sales to rise less than 10% a year through 2015.

Testing the iOS Application

In the 7th and penultimate article of my Sybase UnWired Platform Series developing against iOS, we have created the app and now need to iteratively test. Testing the iOS/SUP application uses a combination of Apple's Xcode Environment, the SUP Control Center and the Logs generated by the Unwired Server. Below is a screen shot of the SUP Control Center web console. This is where we need to register a user against the Unwired Server, including an activation code, before we run the iOS client that has been written.

Will Apple Make the M-Wallet a Reality?

Lately there has been a lot of rumor on the web about the iPhone 5, or whatever it will be called... 4GS? Also today we have the announcement of the iPad 2. One thing that most iSpeculators and Technical iBloggers seem to agree on, with regard to the iPhone 5, along with more internal memory for running of programs and a faster processor, is the use of NFC (Near Field Communication). Yes still speculation until the time the next iPhone will be announced, which will probably be in June at Apple's WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference), but worth talking about in advance. I am also wondering if we will see NFC in the iPad 2 or will Apple wait until a later rev?
