oops - meant "smooth" as well as "striated" mid paragraph...what was I saying about daydreaming?....

Thanks for more interesting comments and another useful article link. I particularly liked the section "writing and reading are not enough". I think this is something I have believed for some time- at school I engaged only in the lessons where the teacher frequently sort our opinions and we discussed things. It was interesting because even if I had been in a daydream I would quickly form thoughts and "opinions" sometimes without conscious thought. Without discussing and questioning what we are learning we miss out on a kind of subconscious intelligence we all have.I've got the book you recommended and a few others on the philosophy of education, and am interested in how we can engage learners intellectually from a younger age (perhaps through some kind of striated e-learning). Small children are all mini philosophers asking why, why all the time and trying out their forming logic in often creative ways, and school often seems to dampen this...Anyway, much more thought needed on this but thanks for your continued support.

Thanks for the link to the article on Carnavalesque, very interesting- something I will reflect further on this evening as I'm seeing Jacobi in King Lear> Perhaps there is there is something of the shakespearian fool in all of us with online interaction- on the whole no bad thing.Have a great break.
