The Sims 3 tops Nordic chart

FIFA 11 dethroned as gamers of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden show their love for all things Sims.

After spending six of the last seven weeks at number one, FIFA 11 has finally been unseated at the top of the Nordic chart, which collates sales data from Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. And it's another EA game, The Sims 3, that replaces it.

The Sims is clearly a popular series in the Nordic territories: expansion Town Life Stuff is at number five and another, Generations, is at number 15. Looking at the charts for individual formats, the entire top four, and seven of the top ten PC games, are Sims titles.

Opinion: Whose game is it anyway?

Who really owns a game, asks N'Gai Croal, its creator or the people who play it?

In the run up to the 2009 public beta for Quake Live, I met with the game’s executive producer, Marty Stratton. One topic of discussion was the tremendous sense of ownership that longtime Quake III Arena players felt towards the game, and what a challenge it could be to deal with some of those fans when they were up in arms. For a variety of reasons, tweaks and changes were made to maps and weapons, but there was a contingent that simply wouldn’t be satisfied unless Quake Live was exactly like Quake III Arena had been.

Skullgirls gallery

New fighting game IP doesn't come along very often, and with good reason: much has to be done to stand out from the established crowd. Developed by a competitive fighting game player, Skullgirls has been built from the ground up with the competitive scene in mind, with an in-depth, feature-filled training mode, the ability to take control of a character while viewing a replay to try and right past wrongs and plenty more besides. Our favourite feature? You have to hold down the start button for a full 15 frames to pause the action, a move designed to avoid accidental mid-match pauses which, in tournaments, mean forfeiting the round. Skullgirls is set for release this year on PSN and Live Arcade, and these screenshots, released at Gamescom, show the newly announced Parasoul in action.

Asura's Wrath trailer

With Devil May Cry 4 disappointing, its reboot entrusted to Ninja Theory and Clover Studio long since disbanded, fans of the complex melée combat systems that Capcom does so well have been left wanting this generation. All eyes, then, are on Asura's Wrath, and while this latest trailer from Gamescom is a little heavy on QTEs and camera cuts, we're hoping there's plenty of depth to the underlying mechanics.

Mojang turns publisher

The studio behind the enormously popular Minecraft is putting its high profile to good use, announcing that it is to publish Swedish developer Oxeye Game Studio's Cobalt. The developer describes it as "more of a team effort than the usual developer/publisher combo," with Notch's team to help with marketing, publicity and distribution.

Sony: Vita RAM rumours were "very funny"

Speaking to Eurogamer at this week's Gamescom in Cologne, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida said that recent reports that Sony had halved the RAM in its upcoming portable to keep costs down were "very funny." Those reports appeared to be corroborated by Reality Fighters developer Novarama, but Yoshida says a RAM cut was never on the agenda. "It's been very funny. Some developer mentioned the RAM was halved," he said. "We never announced the amount of RAM, and we never changed it. We've been making games, right, and we've been showing the games since January. If RAM gets cut in the middle of development, there's no way we can complete the games. So I was like, what's going on?" Sony's PSP successor has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of VRAM, meaning it has more memory than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

CryEngine SDK goes free

Crytek promised earlier this summer that its CryEngine 3 SDK would be made available for free, and it has lived up to that promise: it's now a free download from the link below. There's only a catch if you want to sell the fruits of your endeavour, in which case Crytek asks that you get in touch to arrange a licensing deal.

Zynga's patent problems deepen

The Facebook gaming king was sued for patent violation by Segan LLC earlier this month, and now Bloomberg reports that Zynga is the subject of further litigation. The complainant this time is Agincourt Gaming, alleging that Zynga is in violation of patents covering "credit-based online gaming and a prize redemption system based on the outcome of gameplay." Bill Carmody, senior partner at Agincourt's lawyers Susman Godfrey, said: "Agincourt's patents cover the most lucrative aspects of online social gaming - including those comprising the bulk of Zynga's revenues - as they contain the crucial 'link' that allows for global, interactive prize redemption over the internet." Agincourt seeks unspecified damages and an injunction; looks like Zynga has another battle on its hands.

The business of cards, cow decorated knuckles and a song about Minecraft.

Winning a game of Solitaire is as much about luck as it is skill but, just like Peggle and Drop7, it’s highly compulsive even armed with that knowledge. You could always make your own luck, of course, which is exactly what Lars, Marcus and Theo of near-unpronounceable design collective Skrekkogle did when they set about rending Solitaire’s win screen from the restrictive confines of the monitor.

3DS begins Japanese recovery

Forty per cent price drop has an immediate effect as 3DS outsells PSP by almost five to one.

The sight of a PSP Monster Hunter at the top of the all-formats chart may suggest that it's business as usual in Japan. Further down the list, however, are the first green shoots of 3DS's recovery.

Xenoblade Chronicles review

A glowing return to form for the JRPG that boasts one of the strongest battle systems in the genre.

Xenoblade Chronicles begins in much the same way as its spiritual grandfather, the seminal Japanese RPG Xenogears, did some 13 years ago. No sooner have you settled into the shoes of your protagonist, learned the layout of his pastoral neighbourhood and met the friendly faces that comprise his community in Colony 9, than everything around you is destroyed in a gigantic robot attack.

Ubisoft on Driver San Francisco’s narrative design

We talk to company founder Martin Edmondson’ about the unexpectedly delightful story weaved between the game's racing.

Driver’s story sounds daft: series hero Tanner gets a bonk on the head and ends up in a coma. The game takes place in his dream, and so explains the game’s principle novelty: the ability to leave Tanner’s body and possess that of any other driver in the city. Two things subsequently surprise you.

Lollipop Chainsaw gallery

Suda51's Grasshopper Manufacture is having a busy time of it, working on a PSP Evangelion game, a social game for Mobage, collaborating with Hungarian studio Digital Reality on Sine Mora and working on a radio drama inspired by Hideo Kojima's Snatcher. Its next full-scale console release is Lollipop Chainsaw, which tells of a cheerleader ridding her US high school of a zombie infestation. Warner Bros has already announced plans to publish the game in the west in 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360, and has released the below screenshots to coincide with this week's Gamescom in Cologne.

Ubisoft relaxes Driver DRM

Ubisoft has been busily raising the ire of PC gamers for some time now, delaying the release of many of its games and, in Driver San Francisco's case, requiring a persistent online connection for the game to be played. "We've heard your feedback requiring the permanent internet connection requirement for Driver and have made the decision to no longer include it," the publisher told Rock Paper Shotgun. Instead, the game will only require an internet connection for a single check when the game is launched.

Activision: bullish EA "bad for our industry"

"We shouldn't be tearing each other apart," says Hirshberg of Battlefield 3 publisher's desire to see Modern Warfare 3 fail.

Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, has condemned EA's combative attitude in the run-up to the release later this year of Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, saying: "This kind of rhetoric is bad for our industry."
