Standardized Tooling: Building Bridges, Not Walls

Some walls are necessary. We use brick-and-mortar walls to support buildings and firewalls to protect our computers from attack. But not all walls are good. Consider the Berlin Wall, a wall of segregation. It divided a country and its citizens, but has subsequently been brought down by people working together because upon re-evaluation the Wall did more harm than good.

Forget Oracle and Sun, Let's Talk Cloud Computing!

Yet I spent too many years writing, publishing, and producing for Sun to let this deal go uncommented upon. The relationship started when we shook hands and signed a deal with Ed Zander to acquire an in-house magazine on the day the Loma Prieta earthquake hit the Bay Area (I was with IDG at the time).

Juan Carlos Soto Reaffirms Sun Microsystems’ Commitment to the Cloud

As I noted at the time, Sun’s recent announcements with respect to Cloud Computing were sadly rather overshadowed by the torrent of interest around a piece on the Wall Street Journal site the same day, which broke the news that acquisition talks were allegedly underway between Sun and IBM. Much has changed since then and we [...]

EC Evidently Aims to Hang Intel High

The European Commission has reportedly drafted a final antitrust decision on Intel that – predictably – calls for a fine and a ban on Intel’s allegedly anticompetitive rebates, though what any “ban” – a complex issue – might entail remains to be seen. Imagine now a European entity regulating the business between two American firms like, oh, Intel and IBM, Intel and HP, Intel and Dell, Intel and Cisco, Intel and Apple, Intel and Sun or between Intel and any of the Asian firms.

Sun’s Largest Stockholder Sells Out Early

How odd. Southeastern Asset Management, which spent $2.1 billion buying 22% of Sun over the last few years, didn’t wait around to collect Oracle’s $9.50 a share, money it should have been able to pick up by summer and a price it would have lost roughly $500,000 on. Instead it sold most of its 162 million shares to “unnamed parties” Monday at prices ranging from $9.04 to $9.09, costing it another $65 million–$80 million, according to Reuters, which read it in a regulatory filing.

Of the major companies that announced their earnings yesterday, two of them, AT&T and Apple, beat Wall Street estimates largely thanks to a single product: The iPhone. SYS-CON White Paper: Delivering a Breakthrough Java Computing Experience

In Search of Ancient Astronauts

This is an extremely rare TV re-edit of Harald Reinl's "Chariots of the Gods", based on the book by Erich Von Daniken, produced by Alan Landsburg, and narrated by the one and only Rod Serling. This was a sort of pilot for the later "In Search Of" television series (which was narrated by Leonard Nimoy)

Thriller in Manilla Documentary

Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali fought three times. Their first encounter aroused such anticipation it was dubbed the ""fight of the century"" before either boxer entered the ring. But it was their third and final confrontation on October 1, 1975, in the Philippines, that cemented their rivalry as one of history's greatest. By the late rounds, the fight had become “a contest of pure will” with both men on the verge of collapse. That moment—when a fight becomes more important than life and death—explains both the romance and the sickness of the sport. It wasn’t a fight for a belt; it was a war. What’s remarkable about Thriller in Manila is how dramatically it conveys both the depths of this rivalry as well as the complex racial politics of the time.

Cracking the Maya Code

The ancient Maya civilization of Central America left behind a riddle: an intricate and mysterious hieroglyphic script carved on stone monuments and painted on pottery and bark books. Because the invading Spanish suppressed nearly all knowledge of how the script worked, unlocking its meaning posed one of archaeology's fiercest challenges. Until now.
