New and Unexpected Hero of Gaming: the iPod Touch

Don't blink because you will not see me blog too many times about games. In fact I do not know if I'm part of a large community of IT folks that are not turned on by games and never played games, but I thought I'd blog about something I saw on UK TV this week.

In-shape for Summer with Your Phone

The creation of the iPhone App Store, The Android Market, and the Palm Software Store have issued a wave of mobile applications for consumer's cell phones. With seemingly a mobile application for everything it is only right that developers began to pay it back and develop applications that offer more than farting noises or an inanimate crystal on your phone's screen. Increasing fitness trends and a constant demand to reach physical potential have led developers to create a new wave of health conscious applications that keep you on track where ever you bring your phone.

Google’s Chrome browser has been through 29 updates since it launched six months ago. It’s also one of the only Google products to escape beta. Google’s looking for early developer feedback on new speed enhancements, features and bug fixes.

Opinion: What if IBM Buys Sun For Real?

When Wall Street Journal writes, they have their reasons. A couple of days ago they wrote that IBM wants to buy Sun Microsystems for $6.5B. To me, this is sad news. People will be laid off and some software will cease to exist.

Sun Announces Open Cloud Platform & API

Big news from Sun Microsystems today on several fronts, first there is talk of an IBM / Sun merger and second Sun has offically unveiled their Open Cloud Platform & API. Exciting news on both fronts. As a member of the Sun Cloud Computing Strategic Advisory Council, I have been working closely with Sun since last year in an effort to guide their direction in terms of openness, portability and interoperability on their cloud efforts. These are areas I believe Sun has done a tramendous job of addressing in their latest cloud offering. Lew Tucker, Tim Bray, Craig McClanahan and the rest of the team at Sun have clearly spent a lot of time developing the most feature rich, powerful and open cloud on the market.

Close Encounters of the 3.0 iPhone Kind

On the Apple campus today March 17, Apple hosted a special media event that focused on, and introduced the next generation of the iPhone OS... 3.0. It was an invitation only event that has drawn much interest over the last week, across many blogs and in turn created much speculation of what was going to be announced. If you asked any self respecting iPhone Developer, you would get many wish-list items as well as the same from iPhone users, well now the truth is out there!

Java for Kids - Episode #0

One day my son Davey-steamboat showed up in my office with my rated “R” Java tutorial in his hands. He asked me to teach him programming so he could create computer games. At that time I’ve already written a couple of books on Java and taught multiple classes about computer programming, but all of this was for grownups! A search on Amazon could not offer anything but books for dummies, but Davey is not a dummy! After spending hours on Google I found either some poor attempts to create Java courses for kids, or some reader-rabbit-style books. Guess what? I decided to write one. To help me understand the mentality of the little people, I decided to ask Davey to become my first kid student.
