Tracking the Megatrend of Cloud Computing | @CloudExpo #IoT #M2M #API #Cloud #BigData

There are seven key MegaTrends driving the future of enterprise IT. You can remember them all with the helpful mnemonic acronym CAMBRIC, which stands for Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Mobility, Big Data, Robotics, Internet of Things, CyberSecurity. In this post we dive deeper into the first of these trends, Cloud Computing. We succinctly describe Cloud Computing as the scalable delivery of computational resources. Models of cloud compute include public clouds, private clouds and blends in between. Architectures are in place now that leverage tiers of clouds that can exist in multiple sizes and locations, including homes, businesses and datacenters.

DNS for Today’s Distributed Infrastructure | @CloudExpo #API #Cloud #DataCenter

Data centers have seen a lot of change in a short time. It used to be possible for organizations to run their service from a single data center and house their Domain Name Service (DNS) servers within it. It wasn’t an issue to have them in the same place, since if the data center went down, the DNS servers wouldn’t be of any use. Of course, things aren’t so simple now. Organizations use multiple data centers, sometimes in multiple countries, not to mention cloud regions and highly distributed networks. Consequently, your DNS needs to be just as highly distributed as your content. After all, what good is a Disaster Recovery site if you have no way to direct your users to it?

Gold-Medal Tech, Your Cloud Shopping List | @CloudExpo #IaaS #Cloud #DataCenter

I just had to write an Olympic-themed headline, since today is the first day of the 2016 Summer Games! I love the Olympics. It's so much fun watching athletes do what they're best at. Plus, they have the extra challenge this year of swimming or boating in polluted, mucky water-so it's even more impressive for the winners, I suppose. Technology is charging forward in sports, like everywhere else. New at this year's Olympic Games are underwater lap counters for swimmers and an infrastructure powered by cloud computing, with a full disaster recovery center ready off-site. Keep an eye on network traffic these next few weeks when employees are streaming Olympic events during lunch.

How Not to Build a Cloud | @CloudExpo #Cloud #DevOps #OpenStack

Thomas Bitman of Gartner wrote a blog post last year about why OpenStack projects fail. In that article, he outlined three particular metrics which together cause 60% of OpenStack projects to fall short of expectations: Wrong people (31% of failures): a successful cloud needs commitment both from the operations team as well as from "anchor" tenants. Wrong processes (19% of failures): a successful cloud automates across silos in the software development lifecycle, not just within silos.

DNS Experience Tests: A Key Cog in the Online Ecosystem | @DevOpsSummit #APM #DevOps #ContinuousTesting

A company’s collection of online systems is like a delicate ecosystem – all components must integrate with and complement each other, and one single malfunction in any of them can bring the entire system to a screeching halt. That’s why, when monitoring and analyzing the health of your online systems, you need a broad arsenal of different tools for your different needs. In addition to a wide-angle lens that provides a snapshot of the overall health of your system, you must also have precise, scalpel-like tools that can isolate and analyze all of those different components (DNS, CDNs, internal and external servers, third-party tags, etc.).

Why Apps Should Be Built Like Planes | @DevOpsSummit #APM #DevOps #DigitalTransformation

I’ve been flying quite a bit lately and I started thinking about why apps should be built more like planes. This is not meant to be a deep and insightful blog but rather amusing so I hope you enjoy my perspective!

An Introduction to RESTful APIs | @CloudExpo #API #Cloud #RESTful

Imagine if every PhD dissertation resulted in something that changed the world? That's what happened when Roy Fielding presented his doctoral dissertation on the "representational state transfer" at University of California-Irvine in 2000. This dissertation laid the groundwork for the staggering growth of RESTful web services, which have reshaped how organizations deploy and utilize APIs. In fact, today 70% of public APIs depend on REST services.

Digital Management | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #DigitalTransformation

In today's uber-connected, consumer-centric, cloud-enabled, insights-driven, multi-device, global world, the focus of solutions has shifted from the product that is sold to the person who is buying the product or service. Enterprises have rebranded their business around the consumers of their products. The buyer is the person and the focus is not on the offering. The person is connected through multiple devices, wearables, at home, on the road, and in multiple locations, sometimes simultaneously. Products have rebranded from content management, asset management, CRM, social media, analytics ... to Experience Management for the Consumer. However, the key to success in this IoT enabled world is to treat the buyer as a person and not as a consumer or customer. This means we have to offer the person an immersive experience through their lifecycle every day, at every hour, and everywhere.

Personalization has long been the holy grail of marketing. Simply stated, communicate the most relevant offer to the right person and you will increase sales. To achieve this, you must understand the individual. Consequently, digital marketers developed many ways to gather and leverage customer information to deliver targeted experiences. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Lou Casal, Founder and Principal Consultant at Practicala, discussed how the Internet of Things (IoT) has accelerated our ability to monitor behavior, gather even more customer data and potentially deliver outstanding experiences. Regrettably, as history demonstrates, there are countless examples of how this can go terribly wrong. Perhaps it's time to learn from our mistakes.

Digital - Design Thinking = Status Quo | @ThingsExpo #DigitalTransformation

Every time I call up any customer support and hear the familiar 'all our representatives are busy dealing with other customers,' that my call is very important to them and from the more technologically advanced ones that I am 'fourth in the queue and my approximate wait time is 23 minutes,' I wonder why can't they simply call me back when they are free? They already have my contact number. Some of them actually play some music while I wait - which is still better than those who actually take that opportunity to inform me about their new products.

New From @Qosmos_News | @CloudExpo #vCPE #IoT #DataCenter

Qosmos has announced new milestones in the detection of encrypted traffic and in protocol signature coverage. Qosmos latest software can accurately classify traffic encrypted with SSL/TLS (e.g., Google, Facebook, WhatsApp), P2P traffic (e.g., BitTorrent, MuTorrent, Vuze), and Skype, while preserving the privacy of communication content. These new classification techniques mean that traffic optimization, policy enforcement, and user experience are largely unaffected by encryption. In respect with subscriber privacy, communication service providers can continue to leverage network intelligence to ensure service quality and manage resource utilization.

All About the Metrics: Application Metrics | @DevOpsSummit #APM #Cloud #DevOps

When we talk about today's technology environments, we're mostly talking about complexity. In the past decade or so, there have been some big changes in the way IT manages its resources and responsibilities. Along with the changes in technology (virtualization, cloud computing and others), IT now has to answer to line-of-business teams in brand-new ways. End users are savvy tech consumers now, and their expectations for technology at work are high.

Why IT Security Is a Top Concern for SMBs | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Security

Although security is one of the most talked about topics in the IT channel today, there’s a widespread lack of education and awareness in the workplace. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are welcoming more technology into their everyday environment, but the rapid development of this technology is also accompanied by changes in cybersecurity and Internet threats.

21 #DevOps and #Docker Reference Architectures | @DevOpsSummit #IoT

When building DevOps or continuous delivery practices you can learn a great deal from others. What choices did they make, what practices did they put in place, and how did they connect the dots? At Sonatype, we pulled together a set of 21 reference architectures for folks building continuous delivery and DevOps practices using Docker. Why? After 3,000 DevOps professionals attended our webinar on "Continuous Integration using Docker" discussing just one reference architecture example, we recognized there was a strong interest in the community to learn more. That's why we assembled 20 more reference architectures into this collection. A picture speaks a thousand words, but beyond the images, we also share the details of each DevOps/CD Docker reference architecture. In the bottom right corner of each slide, we share the original blog or presentation source for the image. When one of the images piques your interest, you can then dive deep into the source. Cool, huh?

Monitoring with #ArtificialIntelligence | @CloudExpo #BigData #AI #IoT

Today we can collect lots and lots of performance data. We build beautiful dashboards and even have fancy query languages to access and transform the data. Still performance data is a secret language only a couple of people understand. The more business becomes digital the more stakeholders are interested in this data including how it relates to business. Some of these people have never used a monitoring tool before. They have a question on their mind like “How is my application doing” but no idea how to get a proper answer.

Big Data Is About Getting Small | @BigDataExpo #IoT #IoE #M2M #API #BigData

Okay, okay, that seems like an odd thing to say. But at a recent keynote, that came out of my mouth. But that’s a confusing statement, so let me share the entirety of what I said: Big Data is about getting small; it’s about getting down to the level of the individual. Sometimes the Big Data conversation gets too fixated on the “big” part of the conversation: Is my data big enough? Is my company big enough? Is my analytics team big enough?
