Containers and Microservices By @JKowall | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Microservices

Overgrown applications have given way to modular applications, driven by the need to break larger problems into smaller problems. Similarly large monolithic development processes have been forced to be broken into smaller agile development cycles. Looking at trends in software development, microservices architectures meet the same demands. Additional benefits of microservices architectures are compartmentalization and a limited impact of service failure versus a complete software malfunction. The problem is there are a lot of moving parts in these designs; this makes assuring performance complex especially if the services are geographically distributed or provided by multiple third parties.

[slides] Critical IoT Communications By @ImadMouline | @ThingsExpo #IoT

Contrary to mainstream media attention, the multiple possibilities of how consumer IoT will transform our everyday lives aren’t the only angle of this headline-gaining trend. There’s a huge opportunity for “industrial IoT” and “Smart Cities” to impact the world in the same capacity – especially during critical situations. For example, a community water dam that needs to release water can leverage embedded critical communications logic to alert the appropriate individuals, on the right device, as soon as they are needed to take action.

Dark Truths from Deep Inside the Data Universe By @ABridgwater | @BigDataExpo #BigData

The technology industry is fond of rounding out the year with predictions for the twelve months ahead. It’s almost as if our arbitrary notion of calendar-driven time should be guaranteed to herald the arrival of the next paradigm shift or platform change. Of course we know that in reality, change and development happens continuously and this is especially so in IT. Rather than a ‘what to expect in the year ahead’ discussion, let’s instead look at some of the darker truths that currently stem from the data universe we are all currently trying to circumnavigate.

Vendor-Side DevOps Practices Can Still Deliver Better Value By @CaldwellW | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps

With the private sector making the cultural and technological shift to better DevOps practices, it was only a matter of time before private providers to government clients began to probe how DevOps practices can positively impact application delivery for DoD (and other) clients. I heard a lot of questions targeted to this exact area at […]

Register Now for "DevSecOps: The Open Source Way" Session | @DevOpsSUMMIT @RedHat @GHaff #DevOps #DevSecOps #Microservices

The now mainstream platform changes stemming from the first Internet boom brought many changes but didn’t really change the basic relationship between servers and the applications running on them. In fact, that was sort of the point. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Gordon Haff, senior cloud strategy marketing and evangelism manager at Red Hat, will discuss how today’s workloads require a new model and a new platform for development and execution. The platform must handle a wide range of recent developments, including containers and Docker, distributed resource management, and DevOps tool chains and processes. The resulting infrastructure and management framework must be optimized for distributed and scalable applications, take advantage of innovation stemming from a wide variety of open source projects, span hybrid environments, and be adaptable to equally fundamental changes happening in hardware and elsewhere in the stack.

IoT and Hyper-Contextual Marketing | @ThingsExpo #IoT #InternetOfThings

Consumer IoT applications provide data about the user that just doesn’t exist in traditional PC or mobile web applications. This rich data, or “context,” enables the highly personalized consumer experiences that characterize many consumer IoT apps. This same data is also providing brands with unprecedented insight into how their connected products are being used, while, at the same time, powering highly targeted engagement and marketing opportunities. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Nathan Treloar, President and COO of Bebaio, explored examples of brands transforming their businesses by tapping into this powerful aspect of the IoT. He also reviewed some emerging techniques being used for hyper-contextual engagement in consumer IoT apps.

ReSharper Ultimate: One Key to Run Them All | @DevOpsSummit @ReSharper #DevOps

ReSharper Ultimate is a license that combines all individual JetBrains .NET tools, as well as ReSharper C++. Each ReSharper Ultimate license allows a single developer to use ReSharper, ReSharper C++, dotCover, dotTrace and dotMemory. If a single developer uses Visual Studio to code both in C# (or VB.NET, or TypeScript, or other languages supported by mainline ReSharper) and in C++, they would probably want to have ReSharper help them out in both worlds. Purchasing ReSharper and ReSharper C++ for this developer is a valid option but buying ReSharper Ultimate will actually cost you less than the two-license combo and will additionally make the developer eligible to use dotCover, dotTrace and dotMemory.
