In their Live Hack” presentation at 17th Cloud Expo, Stephen Coty and Paul Fletcher, Chief Security Evangelists at Alert Logic, provided the audience with a chance to see a live demonstration of the common tools cyber attackers use to attack cloud and traditional IT systems. This “Live Hack” used open source attack tools that are free and available for download by anybody. Attendees learned where to find and how to operate these tools for the purpose of testing their own IT infrastructure. They also witnessed a cyber-attack from both sides – attacker and defender. An inside view of how indicators of compromise are researched to develop security content to be deployed for detection based on these attacks.

My key takeaway of WOPR24 is that Performance Engineering as we know it is changing, turning away from traditional load testing and toward production and Continuous Integration, with performance the link between Dev and Ops in DevOps. Software Measurement is a tricky business. When we all agree on what the thing we are trying to count is, like pieces of candy in a jar, it is simple. Sadly, software isn't candy in a jar. We try to count things like bugs, or lines of code, of number of stories completed in a sprint but never agree on what any of those things are in the first place. I have been in trouble more than once in my role as a tester from having my performance judged based on number of bugs I reported in a sprint, or the number of test cases written for a release. How is cloud computing bringing society and its ideas closer together? This got me thinking. Last week the President of the United States started following me on Twitter. Now I realize that it's not really President Obama on the other side of that virtual table, but the event brought to mind the Six Degree of Separation concept. In case you don't remember, this theory states that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world. That random thought led me to wonder if all this social media has actually changed the theory so much that even I can be directly connected to the leader of the free world. A quick internet search revealed that the number of links between two random people have indeed reduced.
I will be completely sympathetic and 100% understanding if you say that all you have heard about private Cloud is good until now and no matter what happens you will never see a disadvantage to it. I could not agree more. Private Cloud is excellent, a great framework but just like a vacation to Hawaii, it has its good and bad sides. When all said and done, here is some food for thought that looks at Private Cloud from a different angle. I see these as disadvantages from a certain perspective and while I hold ground for the Public Cloud, I am not in any way discounting any of these frameworks. Here we go.
